"But that was when Moonpaw heard a small whisper in her mind. I told you I would never leave you."

"Few are welcome here, in our world of secrets and darkness. We are a Clan of cunning and cleverness, a Clan well suited to the shadows of the cold north wind. No other Clan can walk the paths of night like we do. Other Clans may be faster or stronger, but we are the most dangerous warriors: fierce, proud, and independent. We are ruthlessly willing to do what it takes to protect our great Clan. There won't be any softhearted alliances here! ShadowClan will always be the dark heart of the forest."
Blackstar about ShadowClan in Secrets of the Clans, page 55

ShadowClan is a group of cats that live in the marshlands and pines of the forest.[1] Their founding leader, Shadowstar, was the first ever leader prior to the group being named. By extension, the prefix "Shadow" was thought to be given to the Clan.[2]

Description

ShadowClan cats tend to be proud, loyal, defensive, and slightly arrogant. They often seem to be misunderstood and said by the other Clans as battle-hungry, strong, ambitious, and greedy for more territory. ShadowClan cats are also known to be powerful and very battle-skilled. While most other Clan cats do not want to be in a dark, chilling forest, ShadowClan cats 'stick' to the shadows and are able to invent night ambushes for battle training and see in the night. It was often told when the Clans were in the forest, that the cold north wind of the mountains chilled the ShadowClan warriors' hearts.[1] However, Rock also thinks that ShadowClan has the smallest amount of territory and prey, which may justify their willingness to add anything to the fresh-kill pile.[3] Even though their fierce warriors and hostile leaders gave ShadowClan its reputation, an ancient leader named Dawnstar led Firestar to believe ShadowClan was not always as unfair and cruel as they seem now.[4] Their main prey consists of reptiles and amphibians, such as lizards and frogs. When ShadowClan lived in the old forest, their secret food source was the carrionplace, though they were careless to the effects of crow-food, resulting in many sicknesses and deaths.[1] They also hunted rats from this area when prey was scarce.[5] ShadowClan cats hunt best at night and are better than others at sneaking through undergrowth. In battle, ShadowClan cats use shadows as an advantage to fighting.[1]

Territory

In the forest territories

The ShadowClan forest territory was located in an area that Twolegs have no specific name for, though it had many Twoleg places in it, such as Windover Road, the North Allerton Amenity Tip, and North Allerton Road.[6] Landmarks in this territory include:

Notable landmarks in ShadowClan's forest territory

The forest was quite different on ShadowClan's side of the Thunderpath. Instead of thick deciduous trees, the forest in ShadowClan territory had mostly pine trees. The camp was protected by brambles, and the entrance was through a small path in them. There was hardly any grass, but the ground was muddy and cool. The leader's den was beneath the roots of a big oak tree. The warriors' den was under a bramble bush. Made of sticks and brambles, it looked prickly on the outside, but on the inside, it was lined with pine needles and moss.[8] There was a smooth boulder at the edge of the clearing, known as Clanrock,[9] which served as a higher place for the leader to address the camp. Propped up next to this large rock was another rock, and it created a sheltered cave underneath, which was deemed the medicine den. Sick cats could rest in the ferns surrounding the boulder. There was another hollow shielded by a thorn bush. This was the nursery, and the thorn bush provided protection.[10]

In the lake territories

The ShadowClan lake territory is located in an area that Twolegs call the Sadler Woods. The territory also includes Twoleg places such as the Hareview Campsite, the Sanctuary Cottage, and borders called Littlepine Road and the Littlepine Sailing Center.[11] Landmarks in this territory include:

Notable landmarks in ShadowClan's lake territory

The current ShadowClan camp is in a tangle of brambles, with low-hanging branches and boulders all around and above it. These brambles and branches help protect against badgers and other big creatures. It has a small pool of water nearby, so the cats do not have to go all the way to the bottom of the lake to fetch water for elders or the medicine cats.[13] Many trees surround the camp, enabling cats to climb up them and see the activities of the Twolegs on water. From these trees, the cats can see all the Twolegs and their water-monsters in the water. The entrance of the camp is through a thorn tunnel, and brambles. At the camp entrance is a large boulder, which cats have to slip past to enter the camp clearing. In the middle of the camp, a large patch of ferns grow. There is a clear progression of dens from one side of the clearing to the other which are all in bramble thickets. The nursery is first, then the apprentices' den, then the warriors',[14] the leader's and finally the elders' den at the end of the circle. This arrangement enables the kits and elders to be the closest to the low-hanging branches and the warriors to face the entrance, preparing if any kind of trouble arises.[15] The medicine den is located in a far corner, beyond the leader's den. It is a sandy, hollowed-out floor covered in dried pine needles.[16] There, the branches are not so bunched together, allowing the medicine cats to examine the skies in case of omens.[15] Above the leader's den, there is a hazel branch that hangs over.[17] This serves as a kind of vantage point for the leader to address their Clan.[15]

Shadowstar

Shadowstar was her Clan's founder, and the first leader to lose all nine lives.

Shadowstar was her Clan's founder, and the first leader to lose all nine lives.

ShadowClan's founder and first-ever leader, Shadowstar formed her group in the marshes of the old forest, and was a wise, collected, and determined cat. She was the first leader of the Clans to ever lose all nine of her lives. Her deputies were her nephew, Sun Shadow, and Raven Pelt. Pebble Heart was her medicine cat.
When Sun Shadow was killed by dogs, Shadowstar herself lost a life to the canines as well. The ShadowClan leader began to grow paranoid about the fact that a cat wanted her dead and lured the dogs to her, noting the amber eyes watching her she had seen before dying. Growing distrustful of her Clanmates and the other Clans, she tried to find out who had killed her and her nephew while keeping the sight of the pair of amber eyes a secret. Shadowstar eventually admitted her fear of ShadowClan crumbling when she died permanently. After postponing naming her new deputy, she appointed Raven Pelt as Sun Shadow's successor and discovered it was Quick Water who tried killing her before. She went to war with SkyClan, and during the battle, she took the life of Quick Water, who promptly took Shadowstar's last life before she succumbed to death as well. Both she-cats forgave one another in StarClan afterward.
Years later, when ShadowClan is annexed into SkyClan, Shadowstar appeared before the other spirits of StarClan, demanding that ShadowClan be saved, and that there must always be five Clans.

Cedarstar

Cedarstar was a wise and open-minded leader who led ShadowClan for many moons.

Cedarstar was a wise and open-minded leader who led ShadowClan for many moons.

Cedarstar was the leader of ShadowClan after Houndstar. His deputies were Stonetooth and Raggedpelt, and his medicine cats were Sagewhisker and Yellowfang.
Cedarstar led his Clan for many moons. He was more tolerant of outsiders than his successors, and allowed Red and Boulder to join his Clan, proving himself to be a wise leader. He led battles against WindClan and the rats in Carrionplace. He allowed Yellowfang to become a medicine cat, even though he was dubious at first. He also voiced concern and disapproval over the personality and character of Brokenkit, purposefully giving him the mentor of Nightpelt to try and balance the aggressive tom's personality.
He was later succeeded by Raggedpelt after he died of an unknown illness, where he ascended to StarClan and voices displeasure over the leadership of the tyrant Brokenstar.

Raggedstar

Raggedstar made the mistake of allowing Brokentail into a position of power, which led to his murder.

Raggedstar made the mistake of allowing Brokentail into a position of power, which led to his murder.

Raggedstar was the leader of ShadowClan after Cedarstar. His deputies were Foxheart, Cloudpelt, and Brokentail, and his medicine cat was Yellowfang, the cat who he had fallen love with.
Raggedstar was a bold and fierce leader. After his former mate, Yellowfang, gave birth to Hopekit, Wishkit, and Brokenkit, she informed him that the two she-kits, Hopekit and Wishkit, died and that Brokenkit was his son. Raggedstar forced Yellowfang to forget she gave birth to the kits, and gave Brokenkit to Lizardstripe to raise. Raggedstar was very proud and supportive of his son, even when he showed violent and unruly behavior at Gatherings. He made Brokenpaw a warrior early, and when Cloudpelt died under mysterious circumstances, he made Brokentail deputy, despite Yellowfang's objections.
This turned out to be Raggedstar's fatal mistake. Brokentail murdered his own father in cold blood, causing him to lose all his nine lives at once. Brokenstar then received his nine lives and became leader.

Brokenstar

Brokenstar was a tyrant who broke the warrior code by sending young kits into battle. He was overthrown by his ShadowClan opposers, along with help from ThunderClan.

Brokenstar was a tyrant who broke the warrior code by sending young kits into battle. He was overthrown by his ShadowClan opposers, along with help from ThunderClan.

Brokenstar was the leader of ShadowClan after his father Raggedstar. His deputy was Blackfoot, and his medicine cats were Yellowfang and Runningnose.
Born in secret to Yellowfang and Raggedstar, Brokenstar grew up neglected and abused by his foster mother Lizardstripe, and spoiled by Raggedstar. After becoming his father's deputy, Brokenstar affirmed his leadership by killing Raggedstar himself, taking all his nine lives away in order to fuel his greed. His reign quickly established him as a tyrant, abusing the warrior code for his benefit. He apprenticed kits before their sixth moon, forced WindClan out of their home to seize more territory, stole kits from ThunderClan, exiled the Clan elders, and exiled his medicine cat, Yellowfang. He killed cats and showed no remorse over it. His greed and power had no end in sight until ShadowClan rose up against him with the assistance of ThunderClan, forcing him out with his most devoted followers. As a rogue, he attacked the ThunderClan camp, but lost, was taken prisoner and forced to become a ThunderClan elder.
Yellowfang blinded him in the battle with ThunderClan. She took pity on him and kept him as a ThunderClan elder until she poisoned him with deathberries, realizing that the tyrant might be a threat again. He then went to the Place of No Stars upon his death. He served as one of its leaders until his spirit was killed for good by Yellowfang in the Great Battle.

Nightstar

Nightstar succeeded Brokenstar, but was not granted nine lives due to the previous leader still being alive.

Nightstar succeeded Brokenstar, but was not granted nine lives due to the previous leader still being alive.

Nightstar was the leader of ShadowClan after Brokenstar was exiled. His deputies were Cinderfur and Runningnose, and his medicine cat was Runningnose.
Nightstar was a brave, determined, but sickly leader. StarClan refused to grant him nine lives, as Brokentail was still alive at the time of the ceremony and was recognized as ShadowClan's official leader, since he had not given up his nine lives or his name. Despite this, Nightstar acted aggressively to the other Clans, possibly to avoid appearing weak, and occasionally attempted to attack them to gain advantages for ShadowClan. Eventually, ShadowClan was struck by a great sickness, and Nightstar became too weak to leave his den, so Runningnose took over most of the leader, deputy, and medicine cat duties.
Nightstar's condition continued to deteriorate until he eventually lost his only life. His sudden death drove fear into the hearts of the ShadowClan cats, who were under the impression that Nightstar had nine lives, and thus believed the illness was so severe it had the power to kill their Clan leader nine times in a row.

Tigerstar

Tigerstar merged ShadowClan and RiverClan to create TigerClan with the goal of uniting the forest, which was under a ruthless rule that shunned half-Clan cats.

Tigerstar merged ShadowClan and RiverClan to create TigerClan with the goal of uniting the forest, which was under a ruthless rule that shunned half-Clan cats.

Tigerstar was the leader of ShadowClan after Nightstar. His deputy was Blackfoot, and his medicine cats were Runningnose and Littlecloud.
After being banished from ThunderClan for trying to seize power illegally by attempting to murder Bluestar, Tigerclaw saw an opportunity in the weakened and leaderless ShadowClan. He charmed them by bringing them prey and helping with deputy duties when their leader was in no state to do so, until ShadowClan begged for him to become leader after Nightstar's untimely passing. He gladly stepped up and received his nine lives from StarClan.
Tigerstar's tactics were brutal and bloody. He introduced many of his rogue followers into ShadowClan, including the followers of Brokentail who were banished. He had cats train for battle constantly, and with claws unsheathed. He formed an alliance with BloodClan, a group of rogues living in Twolegplace and led by Scourge.
Tigerstar yearned for revenge on ThunderClan after his failed coup d'état and murder. He formed TigerClan by allying with RiverClan. He ordered any half-Clan from Tigerclan cats to be killed, one of them being the RiverClan deputy, Stonefur. He built a pile of prey-bones to address TigerClan from, resembling the Highrock in his old Clan's camp. He promised Leopardstar that when he conquered all four Clans, they would rule equally as joint leaders. Leopardstar was convinced by this and agreed to serve at Tigerstar's side.
After gathering his forces and forming alliances, Tigerstar planned to attack ThunderClan and WindClan, who had banded together to form LionClan. With the combined might of ShadowClan and BloodClan, Tigerstar's plan almost succeeded, but he was betrayed by Scourge, who brutally killed him by inflicting a wound so severe that it drained all his nine lives from him at once.
Tigerstar went to the Dark Forest after his death, where he became one of its leaders. He haunted the dreams of his many descendants, including Brambleclaw, Hawkfrost, Lionblaze, and Tigerheart. He taught them dishonorable battle moves, and encouraged them to overthrow their leaders and rule the forest. He led the Dark Forest cats into an attack on the living Clans, where he eventually met his greatest enemy, Firestar, in battle. His tyranny, both in life and in death, was ended for the final time by Firestar, the cat who Tigerstar had despised ever since meeting him.

Blackstar

Blackstar was a prideful leader who served his Clan for many seasons.

Blackstar was a prideful leader who served his Clan for many seasons.

Blackstar took up the mantle of leadership after Tigerstar. His deputies were Russetfur and Rowanclaw, and his medicine cats were Runningnose, Littlecloud, and Flametail.
Blackstar had one of the longest known leaderships, ruling for a little under nine years. He was a proud and independent leader, and this often caused friction between him and other Clan leaders. When a loner named Sol came to the Clans, he convinced Blackstar to turn his back on StarClan, and the whole of ShadowClan lost faith in their ancestors. Things stayed this way until Lionblaze, Jaypaw, and Hollyleaf faked a sign from StarClan, reigniting Blackstar's faith. When his deputy, Russetfur, died in a border skirmish with ThunderClan, he appointed Rowanclaw as his new deputy.
After the events of the Great Battle, Blackstar believed that all the Clans should always work together and never fight, a stark contrast from his personality when he was a new leader. He was surprised when the Clans battled each other, and desperately tried to cling to the union the Clans had during the battle with the Dark Forest. Every Gathering, he listed off all the names of the cats who died in the Great Battle, and this quickly became annoying for the other leaders to deal with, who, although respected the sacrifices of their dead Clanmates, believed it was time to move on.
During his last days as leader, Blackstar was frail and listless, not willing to do much of anything. He lost his final life in a flood soon after Bramblestar was made leader of ThunderClan, and Rowanclaw succeeded him. Blackstar spends the rest of his days in StarClan, where he is strong and healthy once more.

Rowanstar

Rowanstar's failures allowed for ShadowClan to dissolve twice, causing him to die as Rowanclaw.

Rowanstar's failures allowed for ShadowClan to dissolve twice, causing him to die as Rowanclaw.

Rowanstar succeeded Blackstar after the latter's death. Rowanstar's deputies were Crowfrost, Tigerheart, and Tawnypelt, while his medicine cats were Littlecloud and Puddleshine, and he reigned for just about two and a half years.
While his leadership started out promising, many of ShadowClan's younger members longed for the days of the older ShadowClan, when the Clan was feared, despising the era of peace that they were currently living in and considering the Clan weak. This allowed Darktail to appeal to them and eventually caused several members to leave ShadowClan in favor of joining his Kin, believing that Darktail would be a better leader than Rowanstar. With Rowanstar's leadership failing, he struggled to lead his Clan through the yellowcough plague, an epidemic that cost the life of three cats, including Crowfrost, his deputy. After Rowanstar chose Tigerheart as his successor, Darktail usurped leadership from him, and ShadowClan turned against their leader, forcing Rowanstar, Tawnypelt, and Tigerheart to seek shelter in ThunderClan.
After the Kin were driven out by all five Clans, Rowanstar tried to rebuild ShadowClan and make the Clan grow stronger, but he had lost the respect of his Clanmates, who turned to Tigerheart for leadership instead. Rowanstar struggled with his leadership when Tigerheart disappeared from ShadowClan. With the loss of his deputy and many of his Clanmates, the lack of respect from the remaining cats who blamed him for Darktail's cruel reign, and the other Clans seeing him as weak, Rowanstar made the ultimate decision of annexing ShadowClan into SkyClan. He reverted back to his warrior name and deemed himself a failure, returning what lives he had to StarClan. When offered the position of ShadowClan's leader again, he turned it down, having lost confidence in himself, and instead vouched for Tawnypelt to become the leader. He was later killed saving Flaxkit and Hopkit, and just before his death, he told Tawnypelt that their son, Tigerheart, would return for ShadowClan. He appeared in StarClan and gave Tigerheart his first life, and is now reunited with Dawnpelt and Flametail, his other deceased kits.
While most cats remember him as the leader who allowed his Clan be taken over by rogues, and even gave up his own leadership, he is remembered more fondly by his kin as a kind individual who wanted the best for his birth Clan.

Tigerstar

Tigerstar, named after his late predecessor, helped to rebuild ShadowClan. He made a controversial decision to annex RiverClan during their succession crisis.

Tigerstar, named after his late predecessor, helped to rebuild ShadowClan. He made a controversial decision to annex RiverClan during their succession crisis.

Tigerstar is the current leader of ShadowClan after Rowanstar, his father. Tigerstar's past deputies were Tawnypelt and Juniperclaw, and his current one is Cloverfoot. His medicine cats are Puddleshine and Shadowsight, with Mothwing briefly serving as one of his medicine cats as well. He shares the prefix of his name with his maternal grandfather and past leader of ShadowClan, Tigerstar.
He is one of the children of Rowanclaw and Tawnypelt, having served as a warrior for many moons before being appointed the successor to Crowfrost in the aftermath of the yellowcough plague. He followed his parents to seek shelter in ThunderClan, rekindling a past romance he had with Dovewing. As deputy, he struggled to balance being the leader ShadowClan seemed to think he was, and not trying to undermine his father for leadership. When Dovewing revealed she was pregnant, Tigerheart left ShadowClan to go be with her, fathering Shadowsight, Lightleap, and Pouncestep with her. He gained leadership skills from his brief time with the guardian cats, and decided to return to his Clan after a few moons, taking four members from the group to join his Clan. On his journey home, he ran into four ShadowClan warriors that left the Clan during Darktail's rule: Berryheart, Sparrowtail, Cloverfoot, and Slatefur. They joined him on his patrol back to ShadowClan. Tigerheart died saving a kit from an owl, and briefly went to StarClan where he was resurrected by them with eight lives to lead and reinstate the fallen ShadowClan.
Now focused on rebuilding his Clan, Tigerstar wished to appoint Tawnypelt his deputy, but she stepped down, causing him to appoint his sister's son, Juniperclaw, in her place. He affirmed his place as a leader and grew aggressive towards SkyClan, pushing harder and harder to make his Clan strong again. In a last-ditch effort to get rid of SkyClan without a battle, Juniperclaw went behind his leader's back and poisoned SkyClan's prey pile. While Tigerstar denied the claims of Juniperclaw's actions initially, he was shocked when his nephew confessed what he did. Tigerstar then demoted the deputy back to a warrior, appointing Cloverfoot in his place. Tigerstar later apologized to SkyClan as he was so focused on making his Clan whole again, he forgot that there needed to be five Clans at the lake.
When the new borders proved to be ineffective, Tigerstar demanded they be readjusted so his Clan can could properly. When the Sisters attacked Strikestone, Tigerstar's nephew, he grew livid and demanded they be forced out, becoming much angrier and helping lead the battle to drive them out.
When Bramblestar's impostor began demanding the other Clans to deal with their 'Codebreakers', Tigerstar refused to let a ThunderClan leader tell ShadowClan what to do. He outright opposed Bramblestar, and when he later learned that an impostor was possessing Bramblestar's body, he agreed to help oust the impostor and restore the real Bramblestar. He sheltered Squirrelflight in his camp after she was exiled. He, along with Squirrelflight, helped lead the rebel group to depose of the impostor. During a battle with the impostor, Tigerstar fought him one-on-one and nearly killed him, but after being convinced by Squirrelflight, he took Bramblestar's imposter prisoner instead.
After a few moons of relative peace, ShadowClan was met with an outbreak of greencough. One of the victims of the illness was Tigerstar's own kit, Rowankit. Due to the lack of catmint, Rowankit passed away, and Tigerstar was enraged, believing that Rowankit could have been saved had there been ample catmint. He found out that RiverClan had an abundant supply of catmint, but had not been aware of it because of their current leadership crisis. Tigerstar, figuring out that RiverClan was in a chaotic period, suggested that he take over the running of RiverClan until it found a proper leader. This was met with fervent opposition by the other Clans, and when Tigerstar traveled to their territory to speak with them, the RiverClan cats protested his arrival. ShadowClan and RiverClan engaged in a battle, which Tigerstar won after threatening one of the warriors with death, and he forcibly led RiverClan until Podlight said StarClan told him that Splashtail was to be leader. Tigerstar was overthrown as RiverClan's supervising leader after Splashtail was made leader, and all of RiverClan chased the ShadowClan warriors out of their territory. Tigerstar angrily exiled Berryheart for speaking against him, as well as challenging and questioning his leadership at a Gathering in front of the other Clans. He remains a well respected leader.
