Prey, or fresh-kill,^[1] is a Clan term for the animals, both large and small, that are caught for the purpose of consumption.^[2]

Details

The importance of eating is something that all of the Clans are concerned about every single day.^[3] They eat to keep up strength and maintain the health of the Clan as a whole.^[4] Each of the Clans have a hunting specialty, due to the terrain they are familiar with and the traditions the cats are raised by.^[5]

Many different species of prey are hunted by the Clan cats. Usually, after killing prey, a cat will give thanks to StarClan for its life,^[6] and will bury it to keep it safe from other predators until they are ready to carry it back to camp.^[7] The remains (i.e. the bones, feathers, fur) are usually buried.^[8]

Cats will not kill prey only for fun, without the intention of using it to feed oneself, or the Clan, as this is part of the warrior code.^[9] Prey is killed with respect for giving its life to feed the Clan.^[10] It is also in the warrior code that the hunters may not eat until they have caught prey for the rest of the Clan.^[11] Traditionally, the weaker cats will be fed before the apprentices and warriors.^[12] In leaf-bare, prey is much harder to find than in any other season. Clans may stockpile prey to prepare for the shortage during leaf-bare.^[13]

Crowfood

"Crowfood" is the Clan term for prey that has left to become rotten and unfit to eat.^[4] It is given the name because crows would pick fresh-kill from the Thunderpath after they've been killed by monsters.^[14] Prey typically is considered crowfood after about one or two days since it was killed.^[15] Clan cats will occasionally eat crowfood if they are desperate and starving, but they avoid it as much as possible as it usually causes bellyaches or more severe illnesses.^[4][16] The word "crowfood" is also used in Clan terminology as an insult.^[17] During the time of the ancient Tribe, the term buzzardfood was used as a synonym for crowfood.^[18][19]

In the old forest, a source of crowfood was Carrionplace, where rotten prey could always be found, but it was known to carry sickness.^[20] However, when ShadowClan was led by Brokenstar, his warriors sometimes resorted to eating it, as at the time, the warriors were used for fighting, not hunting. Crowfood is also known as carrion.^[21]

Amphibians

Frogs

Frog	Highest level of classification	Description

In Yellowfang's Secret, Yellowkit unsuccessfully tries to get Silverflame to eat her favorite kind of prey: frog.[29] In Tigerclaw's Fury, Tangleburr catches a brace of frogs for ShadowClan.[30] In Into the Woods, Sasha watches a ShadowClan patrol consisting of Tigerstar, Rowanpaw, and Jaggedtooth chasing a frog. Rowanpaw comments that they are nasty, but Tigerstar says that distasteful or not, prey is prey.[31] In Starlight, Littlecloud comments on his hunger and how he would not mind eating a frog or a toad. That causes the other medicine cats to stare at him in surprise, but Littlecloud defends himself, saying their taste is not so bad.[26] In Shadow, Nightheart's first trial to become a member of ShadowClan is to catch frogs. Initially, Nightheart struggles to catch a single frog, and one even lands on his face. However, he manages to trap numerous frogs in a hole by luring them with spoiling prey. While Tigerstar is pleased with Nightheart's ingenuity, Berryheart is furious that Nightheart did not kill any of the frogs.[25] In Wind, when Frostpaw is sheltering in ShadowClan, she looks forward to sharing a frog with Shadowsight, noting that the amphibian is not well-liked by the rest of RiverClan, but before she can eat it, Tigerstar calls a Clan meeting.[28] In Secrets of the Clans, during the tour of the old ShadowClan camp, Boulder notices that the reader has seen a frog and comments on its unappetizing appearance, saying that he was hesitant to eat them at first too. He encourages the reader to peel off the skin first before eating, as it is very chewy and compares its flavor to rabbit and fish.[32]

Toads

In Moth Flight's Vision, Moth Flight catches a toad and only eats part of it, as she hates the taste. When Spotted Fur joins her, he finishes the toad with her, also disliking the taste.[27] In Starlight, Littlecloud comments on his hunger and how he would not mind eating a toad or a frog. The other medicine cats exclaim in surprise, but Littlecloud defends himself, saying their taste is not so bad[26]

In Yellowfang's Secret, Deerleap catches a blackbird, which Yellowkit is impressed by.[41] Later, when Yellowpaw goes hunting, she stalks a blackbird but she accidentally alerts it and it flies away.[42] Later, Yellowfang is hunting in the forest and catches a huge blackbird which impresses Raggedpelt.[43] In SkyClan's Destiny, Billystorm expertly catches a blackbird by climbing a tree, demonstrating SkyClan's innate hunting skills to Fallowfern's kits.[37] In Fading Echoes, Blossompaw and Ivypaw are hunting together, and Blossompaw catches a blackbird. Ivypaw thinks that Hawkfrost would have sneered at such a clumsy catch.[44]

Bluetits

In Riverstar's Home, Shattered Ice mentions to River Ripple how they used to eat buzzards while living in the mountains.[53] In Moth Flight's Vision, Moth Flight worries that a buzzard might carry off her kits.[54] In The Sight, Onestar reports how the windy weather has made hunting harder for the buzzards and hawks.[51] In The Raging Storm, Flypaw brags to Harepaw that her mentor Twigbranch will show her how to catch buzzards one day.[55] In Thunder, Whistlepaw lies that Frostpaw might've been killed by a buzzard on WindClan's territory.[56]

Chickens

In The Rise of Scourge, Tiny is offered chicken by an old she-cat, who comments that she is surprised he does not know what it is, since he is a kittypet. He describes it as the most delicious thing he has ever eaten.[61] In Shattered Peace, Willie, Minty, Tess, Snapper, and Pounce come into the barn where Ravenpaw and Barley live. After the barn catches fire, Ravenpaw and Barley find Willie, Tess, Snapper, and Pounce in the rafters above the chicken house. Willie sneers at them and they attack the chickens, killing some chicks.[62] In The Heart of a Warrior, when the ThunderClan group tries to attack the rogues, the chickens notice and give out an alarm, thinking that they are part of the rogues as well.[63] In Sunset, Daisy mentions Twolegs keeping large birds for fresh-kill, and that they set out traps for foxes that attempt to kill these birds for themselves. The birds mentioned are most likely chickens that are of a meat production breed.[64] In Hawkwing's Journey, during SkyClan's journey, Hawkwing and Pebbleshine are searching for food, when they come across a truck carrying cages of chickens. However, as they are attempting to hunt the chickens in order to feed the Clan, the truck takes off, taking Pebbleshine with it.[58]

Crows

In Path of Stars, Violet explains to Gray Wing how Slash used to make them take dead bodies to the carrion place for the crows and rats to eat.[72] In Into the Wild, Ravenpaw catches an old, yet big, crow, impressing Tigerclaw.[70] In Fire and Ice, Yellowfang argues that Brokenstar is too weak to escape long, else a fox or a mob of crows would easily kill him.[71] In Dark River, Brackenfur catches a crow after Hollypaw questions him about the new kits in ShadowClan and whether she would be able to fight them in battle.[73]

Eagles

In The Sun Trail, four eagles attack the journeying cats,[79] resulting in Bright Stream's death when she is carried away by one of the eagles.[82] In Moonrise, Stormfur almost gets caught by an eagle as he jumps across a gap on the way to the Tribe of Rushing Water.[80] Later, Talon of Swooping Eagle explains how he was named after the scar on his face from an eagle attacking him as a kit.[83] In Dawn, Marshkit almost gets taken by an eagle, but Brackenfur saves him by clawing at the bird until it loosens its grip.[76] In Outcast, as Jaypaw crosses a gap on the way to the Tribe, an eagle screech startles him.[78] In Sign of the Moon, Swoop of Chestnut Hawk is carried away and killed by an eagle. Dovewing is especially shaken.[84]

Falcons

In Moonrise, Brook is chasing a mouse when a falcon gets it before her. Suddenly, they see a falcon feasting on a shrew. Three mud-streaked cats jump out at the falcon and kill it, and the Clans find the Tribe.[87]

Finches

In Crookedstar's Promise, Sedgepaw catches her first prey: a finch. She stares at it on the fresh-kill pile for a long time, waiting quite a while for someone to eat it.[90] In Into the Wild, Graypaw wolfs down a finch.[11] In Ivypool's Heart, Icewing spots a finch with a dull red breast and suggests that the cats hunt it, but before they can do so, the bird is spooked by a pine marten which itself was frightened by horses.[89]

Geese

Grouse

In A Forest Divided, Gray Wing catches a grouse and brings it back for the moor cats.[99] In Path of Stars, Gray Wing's patrol tries to catch a grouse, but before they can do so, they are attacked by rogues.[100] Later, when Slate and Gray Wing's kits are born, Gray Wing remembers his journey to where he is, recalling his first time tasting grouse and sharing it with Turtle Tail.[101] In Tallstar's Revenge, Barkpaw reports that Ryepaw and Larksplash caught a grouse.[97] Later, while on a patrol, Dawnstripe scents grouse, and Aspenfall and Plumclaw join her in trying to catch it, but Talltail accidentally scares it away.[102] In Night Whispers, Lionblaze, Leafpool, Cinderheart, and Dovepaw bring back two rabbits, a thrush, and a grouse from a hunting patrol.[98] In Tigerheart's Shadow, Fierce grabs a grouse from the Twoleg gathering, which Tigerheart takes back to the stash.[103]

Gulls

In Warrior's Return, gulls can be seen flying around the sun-drown-place.[110] In Bramblestar's Storm, at a Gathering, Onestar reports that birds have been blown in from the sun-drown-place and that they have difficulty landing, making them easy catches.[108] Later, Bramblestar's patrol sees a WindClan hunting party chasing huge white birds. When one of the birds crashes into a bush, Molewhisker gives it the killing blow. The WindClan cats claim that the bird belongs to them as they were hunting it, but Bramblestar refuses to give in. Bramblestar finds the scent of the bird familiar, and when he brings it up to Squirrelflight, his deputy recognizes the salty taste of the sun-drown-place.[106] In Ivypool's Heart, Snow warns the traveling cats to watch for gulls, as they are dangerous in large numbers, even attacking and stealing prey from Twoleg kits.[109] The cats decide to follow a gull to fulfill Whistlepaw's dream of a feather, leading them to a shore. A seagull drops a fish it was carrying, then tries to attack the cats for it. Before Ivypool can kill the bird, a flock of gulls descends upon them, but the cats manage to outrun them. They are hardly able to rest, however, when they are surrounded by a swarm of crabs, and are eventually forced to take shelter in a crevice until both the crabs and gulls leave.[107] Later, after freeing the wildcats, the Clan cats are at the beach again when a seagull tries to steal Icewing's fish, but Stalk Purr kills it and shares it with the other cats, having learned how to catch the birds with her mate before their captivity.[111]

Hawks

	Genus: Accipiter[112]	Large[86] strong[113] birds of prey[114] with long, sharp talons, broad brown[113][115] striped[116] or gray wings,[117] a huge, sharp beak,[118] and yellow eyes.[119] They are very quick and difficult to catch; a hawk can easily break a warrior's spine with its strong wings.[115] Can be found in the mountains.[75] Can kill cats, especially if there is limited cover.[120] The hawks in the forest territories are smaller than eagles compared to the mountain hawks, and they resemble sparrows.[121] May also be called sparrow hawks.[122]
In The Sun Trail, Gray Wing and Clear Sky together bring down a hawk, and drag it back to the cave for the others to eat.[119] In Ivypool's Heart, Galestar recalls how some StormClan cats were killed by hawks during their journey.[120] In Tallstar's Revenge, Talltail kills a hawk when it attempts to snatch his younger half-siblings near the WindClan camp. Whiteberry compliments the catch, as the wings are strong enough to crack a warrior's spine.[115] In A Dangerous Path, Snowkit is taken by a hawk flying over ThunderClan camp searching for prey. His mother, Speckletail, is unable to free him from the hawk's talons.[114] In Moonrise, Crag teaches Stormfur how to hunt hawks by saving him from one. It is noted that the hawk chicks are taken as prey in the season of "freed-water."[86] In Dawn, when all the Clans are starving, Tornear reports that Crowpaw had captured a hawk a few days earlier.[123] In Darkness Within, Spotfur is attacked by a hawk and tries to catch it, but is badly injured and nearly carried off by the bird before Rootspring, Bristlefrost, and Needleclaw are able to drive it off.[113]

Herons

In Crookedstar's Promise, Crookedkit protects Graykit and Willowkit from a heron that was attempting to snatch them. Ottersplash, Rippleclaw, and Beetlepaw help him; Beetlepaw intends to catch the heron until Rippleclaw tells him to let go, implying that the taste of heron is terrible.[125] In Leopardstar's Honor, Leopardpaw swims across the river to grab a carp before a heron does.[127] In Star, Frostpaw recalls how she and her littermates used to chase after fish that were hiding from herons in the shallow and reed-filled waters.[128]

Jackdaws

Lapwings

In The First Battle, Wind narrowly catches a lapwing.[134] In Moth Flight's Vision, Moth Flight misses catching a lapwing, much to the disappointment of her mother Wind Runner.[133] In Tallstar's Revenge, Plumclaw is eating with Tallkit, and mentions lapwings to be her favorite meal; however, they are only hunted for in the breeding season.[135] Later, Tallpaw watches as lapwings swoop down in the heather, protecting their young.[131] In Onestar's Confession, Onewhisker nervously eats a lapwing while he worries about his leadership ceremony.[136]

Magpies

In Crookedstar's Promise, a magpie knocks Stormkit out of a tree. Later, Shellheart organizes a patrol to catch it.[138] In Forest of Secrets, Cinderpaw offers to take Bluestar some fresh-kill and she grabs a magpie. Upon lifting the bird off of the fresh-kill pile, its flesh falls away to reveal that it is covered with maggots.[140] In River, Flamepaw misses a magpie during his warrior assessment. The bird angrily squawks as it flies away, scaring the nearby prey and resulting in Flamepaw's failure.[141]

Moorhens

In Crookedstar's Promise, while Crookedstar walks along the river, he sees fish near the surface and spiky footprints where a moorhen had walked.[143] In Bluestar's Prophecy, Bluefur spots a moorhen snuffling among roots of a tree. She strikes at it, and Oakheart shows up to praise her.[145] In Firestar's Quest, after the flood, Firestar and Sandstorm continue along the river searching for the gorge. They see many remnants of the flood including moorhens squawking miserably for lost chicks.[146] In Star, Nightheart spots a moorhen near the Twoleg halfbridge as it scurries across the shore of the lake.[147]

Pheasants

In Mapleshade's Vengeance, Rabbitfur recalls a time he and Birchface were stalking a pheasant by Twolegplace.[152] In Dawn, Shrewpaw chases after a pheasant over a Thunderpath, knowing that such a large bird would feed the Clan very well, and he is hit and killed by a monster. Thornclaw, Shrewpaw's mentor, explains this to Firestar when he returns to camp.[149] In Sunrise, Brambleclaw disturbs a pheasant while leading the patrol back from the sun-drown-place. The pheasant flies out of a patch of bracken and lets out an alarm call, and scares a squirrel out of the undergrowth.[153]

Pigeons and doves

In Thunder Rising, Gray Wing, Rainswept Flower, Turtle Tail, Wind, and Gorse hunt pigeons and share their catch with the stranger River Ripple.[159] In Rising Storm, Cloudpaw kills a pigeon before Fireheart is able to and mistakes it for a dove.[10] Cloudpaw neglects to bring it back,[162] and when later interrogated by Fireheart, Cloudpaw says that some owl probably flew off with it.[163] In Tigerclaw's Fury, Cedarheart and the other elders of ShadowClan share a pigeon that Tigerclaw and his rogues bring to camp.[164] In A Dangerous Path, Whitestorm reports pigeon feathers scattered all over the ground near Snakerocks and the place reeks of dogs. Fireheart dismisses it, and says it is not important.[165] In The Last Hope, a pigeon caught by Berrynose is put on the fresh-kill pile. Graystripe eyes it hopefully but is advised by Firestar to go hunting to get some exercise. Hollyleaf then jokes about Graystripe looking like the pigeon.[166] In Sky, Sunbeam recklessly volunteers to fetch Flaxfoot's pigeon, which had fallen into a bramble thicket. Sunbeam retrieves the pigeon, though her pelt is severely scratched.[158]

Plovers

Quails

Robins

She then unsuccessfully attempts to catch it.[175] In Into the Wild, when Smudge talks about Henry, he mentions that Henry caught a robin in the woods. Smudge also says that baby robins were out stretching their wings, after which Rusty asks if he caught any.[1] In Starlight, a hunting patrol starts to leave when Birchkit says he wants to come too, as he is good at hunting. To prove it, he jumps at a robin at the edge of the hollow. Brambleclaw and Dustpelt lunge for him, and Brambleclaw catches him first.[176] In Dark River, when it suddenly starts raining, Stormfur and Brook are seen crouched below the Highledge sharing a soggy robin.[73]

Rooks

Jessy manages to kill the rook while Spiderleg protects his apprentice. Bramblestar notices the nearby nest with the mother rook and her eggs, but Jessy protests against killing the soon-to-be mother.[178]

Snipes

In Yellowfang's Secret, Nutkit admits that he found a dead sparrow in a bramble patch, which later causes him to get a bellyache.[191] In Fire and Ice, Brackenpaw plucks feathers from a sparrow.[192] In Darkness Within, Shadowsight observes his Clanmates on a hunting patrol as he tries to learn their techniques, and accidentally scares off four sparrows, upsetting Hollowspring.[193]

Starlings

In Yellowfang's Secret, Finchflight mentions Rowanpaw caught a starling.[42] Later, Yellowpaw settles down next to her brother, Nutpaw and eats a starling.[198] In Rising Storm, Cloudpaw runs past a small group of starlings, and the birds scurry upward in a flutter of wings.[199] In Midnight, Cloudtail feasts on a starling, happy there is good food even though prey is so scarce.[200] Later, Brambleclaw gulps down a starling as Squirrelpaw asks him if he has had any more dreams from StarClan.[201] In Dawn, Brambleclaw catches a starling for the fresh-kill pile.[202] In Wind, Sunbeam catches a starling, and remembers that it is her mother Berryheart's favorite kind of prey. The tabby-and-white warrior notes that she herself rarely gets to have starling as it is more common in ThunderClan territory than ShadowClan and is not easy to catch.[197]

Thrushes

In Rising Storm, Fireheart catches a thrush, plus a rabbit for the two ShadowClan cats, Littlecloud and Whitethroat, when they come to beg for help.[206] In Dark River, Cinderpaw covers for Lionpaw by saying he ate a stale thrush.[73] Later, Whitewing is seen carrying a plump thrush back from a hunting patrol.[207] In Outcast, Jaypaw accidentally startles a thrush that Berrypaw is stalking, causing Berrypaw to be furious, considering that it is his warrior assessment.[208] In Tigerheart's Shadow, Tigerheart manages to catch a thrush for his kits, pleased that his kits will finally eat like warriors. However, the kits are skeptical about eating birds instead of scraps. The kits manage to tentative eat the thrush after Dovewing tears it into strips.[161] In River, attempting to prove his bravery during his second warrior assessment, Flamepaw catches a thrush before a hawk can snatch it, though his reckless behavior causes him to fail again.[117]

Wagtails

It flies onto a branch above the training hollow before calling in alarm and flying away.[211] In Lost Stars, Bristlepaw manages to catch a wagtail with Stemleaf's help, impressing both him and her mentor Rosepetal.[210]

Warblers

In Leopardstar's Honor, Leopardstar's patrol catches a warbler and two voles for the prey pile.[215] When Skyheart complains about eating a mouse, Leopardstar reminds her that she's eaten warbler and water vole before.[216] In The Silent Thaw, on the way to the Moonpool, Shadowsight hears a warbler chattering nearby and becomes spooked when it abruptly falls silent.[217] In Thunder, Sunbeam spots a warbler flying over the lake towards the reeds in RiverClan's territory.[214]

Wrens

In A Forest Divided, Jagged Peak returns to camp with a wren for his mother Quiet Rain, though she is disinterested in eating it.[220] In Path of Stars, Slash taunts Frog with a fat thrush and instead throws a tiny squashed wren for him to eat.[101] In The Sight, Jaykit smells out a wren with a belly alive with maggots in the fresh-kill pile and shows it to Leafpool, who praises him for finding it.[219] In Dark River, when it suddenly starts raining, Hollypaw and Cinderpaw are caught in surprise. They skid in the rain, picking a wren and a mouse from the fresh-kill pile and Cinderpaw grimaces at the muddy wren.[73]

Eggs

In Sign of the Moon, Stoneteller ends all border patrols, angrily pointing out that with the coming thaw the Tribe will be able to eat eggs and young birds stolen from nests despite the intruders stealing their other prey. This suggests that eggs and chicks are only stolen in times of greatest need.[222] In Ravenpaw's Farewell, Ravenpaw, Bella, and Riley eat some eggs on their journey to SkyClan.[223] In Shadow, part of Nightheart's final assessment is to raid a pigeon's nest. However, he purposefully fails the test, and the eggs fall out of the nest.[224] In Code of the Clans, the ancient WindClan apprentice Quickpaw is mentioned to have a knack for tracking and carefully recovering plover eggs.[168]

Fish

In Forest of Secrets and Leopardstar's Honor, the fish in the river become poisoned from Twoleg rubbish and trash, and RiverClan begins to starve.[231][232][233] In A Dangerous Path, Graystripe catches a slippery silver fish from the river and gives it to Fireheart and Sandstorm, saying they will need prey after the fire.[165] In Midnight, Feathertail catches shiny golden fish from a Twoleg garden pond during the journey to Midnight. These fish are quite unlike any other fish the Clan cats have seen before.[234]

Bream

Chub

In Riverstar's Home, Night gifts River Ripple a chub.[242] In Moth Flight's Vision, Dappled Pelt brings a chub for Micah and Moth Flight to try, and Moth Flight is impressed how delicious it tastes.[243] In Leopardstar's Honor, Leopardpaw mentions to Sunpaw that although Whitefang pointed out a chub in the river, she was not able to swim to it.[127] In The Elders' Quest, during a time of scarce prey, Rootspring catches two chubs, though his Clanmates are skeptical about eating fish. Hawkwing splits the fish between the warriors, with Starlingpaw forcing down his small share.[244]

Loaches

Minnows

In Riverstar's Home, Riverstar and his patrol hunt where the river flows into the gorge where salmon sometimes migrate.[258] In Leopardstar's Honor, Leopardfur and her patrol steal a large salmon from a fishing Twoleg.[228] In Thunder, Riverstar tells Frostpaw to find a tree the color of salmon's flesh.[256] She and Nightheart later find the Cats of the Park living near a tree that glows pink.[259] In Star, Oatclaw asks Owlnose if he can try a piece of salmon, horrifying his Clanmate Appleshine.[260]

Trout

Mammals

Bats

In The First Battle, Jackdaw's Cry catches a bat after starving for several days, and promptly eats it.[265] In Sunrise, Lionblaze notices a bat flying near a Twolegplace and tries to catch it. Birchfall says that he wished he had caught it, and suggests then they could have all had a bite to eat. Lionblaze says it would been a very small bite since there are six of them.[266] In The Silent Thaw, Violetshine and Palesky listen to Pigeonfoot's story about catching a bat the previous day.[267] In Ivypool's Heart, Icewing sees what looks like a fast-moving dark cloud before Ivypool realizes that it is made of bats. The bats fly past the she-cats as they head toward their cave, and Ivypool snags one from the air. Icewing dares the ThunderClan cat to eat the creature, and though she is hesitant, Ivypool takes a bite, recoiling at the taste. She tells Icewing that it tastes like a mouse with wings, and Icewing tells her they have fish they can eat instead.[264]

Deer

In A Forest Divided, Sun Shadow tells Thunder that voles and mice are found as prey in the mountains, along with an occasional deer carcass left by a sharptooth.[270] In The Fourth Apprentice, Toadfoot scents a dead deer in the stream and orders everyone to get out. Rippletail speculates that it died of thirst. Dovepaw is confused as to why she did not scent it when Toadfoot did.[271] In Tigerheart's Shadow, Tigerheart eats a deer which he thinks was hit by the Thundersnake. It is his first time tasting deer, but he does not enjoy it.[272] In Ivypool's Heart, Ivypool and Rootspring watch as a huge, white stag drinks from a stream. After it leaves, Ivypool is certain that the magnificent creature was a sign from Bristlefrost to her and Rootspring to reassure the living cats of her presence.[269]

Hares

In The Sun Trail, after being taught how to catch one, Jagged Peak successfully catches a snow hare, which is bigger than himself.[276] In Moonrise, in order to kill the mountain-cat, Sharptooth, the six Clan cats try to kill him with a mountain hare filled with deathberries.[275] In Eclipse, after the Clans have helped with the rogues, Hollypaw sees an eagle flying after a hare that is pelting in terror.[77] In Sign of the Moon, Jagged Lightning is seen dragging back an enormous snow-white hare.[277]

Mice

In Into the Wild, Firepaw's first prey that he catches is a mouse.[3] In A Dangerous Path, Bramblekit's first prey that he catches is a mouse.[279] In Mistystar's Omen, Mistystar leads a patrol through some bracken, where they find a nest of hairless mice. They hunt and kill the mice, but she knows that they are too tiny to fill the fresh-kill pile.[226]

Pine martens

	Species: M. martes[280]	Slender, weasel-like animals with bushy tails that are smaller than cats and nimble climbers. Found in RiverClan and ShadowClan territory.[89]
In Ivypool's Heart, while searching for prey, Ivypool scents and tracks down an unknown animal which Icewing identifies as a pine marten. Ivypool recalls hearing ThunderClan warriors talking about the animal but has never seen one herself, and she realizes that she does not want to eat the incredible animal now. Rootspring says that is just as well, as he has heard about pine martens' fierce fighting skills and doubts that they could kill it without being injured. When the journeying cats hide from the Twolegs and horses, Dovewing goes into the pine marten's den and expresses relief that it did not return while she was hiding there.[89]

Rabbits

In Into the Wild, Smudge mentions that wild cats that live in the woods eat live rabbits for breakfast.[286] In A Dangerous Path, ThunderClan patrol finds remains of a scattered rabbit not far from camp, and Bluestar uses this as evidence to show WindClan have been stealing prey from ThunderClan.[114] Later, Tigerstar leaves a trail of rabbits to ThunderClan's camp for the pack to follow.[287] In Moonrise, Crowpaw catches a rabbit and feeds it to Stormfur, Brambleclaw, Feathertail, and Squirrelpaw.[50] Leafpaw and Sorreltail cannot smell the usual scent of rabbit.[288] Later, Squirrelpaw tells everyone that she can smell the scent of rabbits.[80] In Darkness Within, Hollowspring and Blazefire catch a rabbit together and demonstrate cooperative hunting techniques to Shadowsight.[193]

Rats

In The Sun Trail, while stopping for a rest as they follow the sun trail, Jagged Peak and Moon Shadow are shown bringing back a small brown bird, and a rat almost the size of a kit.[82] In Fire and Ice, WindClan catches rats during their exile from the forest.[292] In Rising Storm, a disease spread by the rats of Carrionplace breaks out in ShadowClan,[20] killing many cats, Nightstar and Cinderfur being among them.[293] In Firestar's Quest, rats eventually drove out SkyClan from the gorge,[290] until Firestar led a new patrol of the rejuvenated SkyClan to defeat them.[294]

Shrews

In Into the Wild, Graypaw says that Sandpaw and Dustpaw must have eaten a shrew while on duty.[296] In Rising Storm, Cloudpaw is gone for a long time, making Fireheart anxious. When he comes back, he has a tiny shrew in his mouth, and Fireheart asks him how many cats that is going to feed.[155] In The Darkest Hour, when Firestar, Graystripe, and Ravenpaw sneak onto RiverClan land, they spot the Bonehill, and Firestar notes that he can see shrew bones.[15]

Squirrels

In Yellowfang's Secret, two StarClan cats are seen chasing a squirrel up an oak tree.[301] In Bluestar's Prophecy, a plump squirrel falls on top of Bluekit.[298] Later, Bluepaw makes her first catch on her first day as an apprentice: a squirrel. The warriors and elders are noted to be especially impressed, and Bluepaw waits for a cat to pick it off the fresh-kill pile.[302]

Voles

In Crookedstar's Promise, when Crookedkit is with Fleck, Mitzi, and her kits, Fleck gives him a live vole, and urges him to kill it. Crookedkit mentions it is a strange tasting mouse, but Fleck corrects him, telling him it is a vole. Fleck tells him that they should bring it back to Mitzi.[306] In Fire and Ice, Cloudkit, Ashkit, and Fernkit venture into the snow to catch a vole for the Clan.[304] In Warrior's Refuge, Millie catches her first vole.[305] In The Last Hope, Briarlight is excited when she jabs a vole from the fresh-kill pile.[307]

Water shrews

In Fire and Ice, Graystripe falls into the river while trying to catch a water vole.[12] In A Dangerous Path, Cloudpaw, and Swiftpaw sniff at a water vole hole, waiting in anxiety for it to pop out.[311] In Dark River, Cinderpaw says that she caught four water voles while she, Hollypaw, and Mousepaw were being assessed.[312]

Weasels

Reptiles

Adders

In Mapleshade's Vengeance, at a Gathering, a ShadowClan cat recalls Marshpaw stepping on an adder during a patrol, saying it was a bad way to die.[319] Later, Mapleshade confronts Frecklewish by Snakerocks, and Frecklewish lunges at her. When Mapleshade dodges, Frecklewish lands in a pile of stones, where she suffers an adder bite.[320] In Into the Wild, Ravenpaw catches an adder on a hunting assessment when he is assigned to Snakerocks, impressing both Graypaw and Firepaw.[321] In Cats of the Clans, Adderkit is killed by a snake bite, hence the name. Tallstar avenges the young kit's death by killing the snake shortly afterwards.[322]

Lizards

In Yellowfang's Secret, Yellowfang is said to have caught a lizard on her first hunt with Deerleap as an apprentice.[42] In Firestar's Quest, Firestar disturbs a lizard basking on a rock. As his shadow falls on it, the lizard whisks into a crack.[324] In Secrets of the Clans, lizards are mentioned as one of ShadowClan's main prey.[325] In Code of the Clans, when the story of the four original leaders is being told, it is mentioned that the cats with a taste for lizards and snakes followed Shadow.[326]

Snakes

In Into the Wild, Ravenpaw catches an adder, a type of snake (See more under Adders).[321] In Sunrise, Honeyfern is killed by a venomous snake while sacrificing her life to prevent Briarkit from getting bitten.[329] In order to stop anymore snake-provoked deaths in the hollow, Firestar devises a plan for the snake to eat a mouse stuffed with deathberries[330] and thorns;[331] however the plan fails,[332] leaving the cats to constantly put stones across the area in which the snake had been living in.[333] In Cats of the Clans, Adderkit is killed by a bite from a venomous adder, hence his name. Tallstar avenges the young kit's death by killing the snake shortly afterwards.[322]

Cnidarians

Jellyfish

In Ivypool's Heart, at the sun-drown-place, Whistlepaw discovers a round, fragile, see-through blob with long tendrils trailing from it. Tumble Leap says she does not recognize it, and Rootspring tries a bite of it, but finds it revolting. He warns Icewing against eating the creature, but Icewing already thinks it looks disgusting. When all of the cats gather to eat their prey, Tumble Leap thanks the spirits for their catches, even for the "blob thing," surprising the Clan cats.[111]

Insects

Beetles

When the rest of the cats share their prey, Ivypool reports that she has several "shell things," leading them to the rock pool where she collected the creatures.[111]

Worms

Earthworms

In Goosefeather's Curse, during the hard leaf-bare, Cloudberry offers to share worms with Goosefeather that were dug up by Rabbitpaw.[341] In Tallstar's Revenge, Shrewkit's favorite taunt for Tallkit was calling him Wormkit, and later Wormpaw and Wormcat.[342][97][343] Later, Flailfoot tells Tallpaw how his father used to despise digging through worm soil, and he would rather dig through clay than get claws underneath his claws.[196]
