A camp is a site where a group of cats makes its permanent home.^[1] It is where the cats sleep, meet, bring fresh-kill,^[2] get treated for injuries or illness,^[3] receive orders, share tongues, make reports to the Clan leader or deputy, and have ceremonies.^[4] Some cats, such as queens, kits, and elders stay in the camp, while the warriors, apprentices, deputy, and leader patrol the territory and hunt. Each Clan has one camp.

Location

Each camp is situated on the Clan's own territory. The main criteria for choosing a site that is:

• It provides some protection from the elements.^[5][6]
• Is difficult to attack, and easy to defend.^[7][8]
• Is at a safe distance from Twolegs, Twoleg facilities, and other dangers.^[9][8][10]
• Is large enough to accommodate all Clan cats.^[11]
• Has a source of water in the camp or nearby.^[12]
• Has places for a warriors' den, apprentices' den, nursery, medicine den, elders' den, and leader's den.^[13][14]

Structure

The term was first coined by Clear Sky's group when he created what would soon be known as SkyClan's camp.^[1] Most camps are surrounded by some means of natural protection (such as thickets, stone walls or water) that shelter them both from weather and enemy attacks.^[15][5] They usually have a single entrance, where only one cat can pass at a time (such as a tunnel under the thickets) along with one small entrance and exit to make dirt.^[16] However, there can sometimes be secret entrances/exits, such as in ThunderClan's lake camp.^[17] In addition to the natural defense, warriors patrol and protect the camp day and night.^[18]

Main clearing

All camps contain a large, open area in their middle. Cats gather here to meet each other, sun themselves, share tongues and participate in Clan meetings. The main clearing usually also contains:

• The fresh-kill pile, a spot where hunters drop the prey they caught and brought to the camp and where cats get their food from. Sometimes, if it has rained or is raining, they will store their prey in the ground to keep it dry.^[2]
• A vantage point from where the leader addresses the Clan during a meeting, such as a large rock or a branch or root of a tree.^[19]

Dens

Dens are sheltered locations (such as thickets or caves) used by a cat or a group of cats to rest, sleep and recover. Beddings of moss, bracken, wool, and ferns are used to rest on. The dens are usually cleaned and tidied by the apprentices of the Clan. Most camps contain all (or several) of the following:

• Nursery - The den shared between the queens and kits,^[19] usually the safest and most protected and warmest.^[20][21]
• Apprentices' den - The den shared between the apprentices.^[22]
• Warriors' den - The den shared between the warriors and the deputy.^[23] Senior warriors usually sleep towards the center, where it is warmer, while younger cats sleep near the edge, where it is colder.
• Medicine den - The den that belongs to the medicine cat and their apprentice,^[24] who store their herbs and other supplies here as well.^[3] Cats with severe injuries and illness also rest here until they recover and are able to return to their own dens.^[25]
• Elders' den - The den shared between the elders,^[26] usually the second most protected and warmest.^[21]
• Leader's den - The den where the Clan leader lives. Leaders' dens are known for being nice dens. Leaders often spend time here in seclusion; however, they can be visited by other cats, or choose to spend the night with their mate.^[4]

Outer facilities

The following can be encountered in the vicinity of the camp:

• Burial place - A location where dead Clanmates are buried.^[27]
• Dirtplace - A location where the cats make dirt,^[22] and dump inedible food (bones, feathers, crowfood).
• Prison - A location where cats hold prisoners that is within the camp boundaries but is separate from the main area.^{[28][29][30][31]}

ThunderClan

The ThunderClan forest camp is in a small, sandy ravine that used to be a riverbed a long time ago. From the top of the ravine, nothing but the same undergrowth present in the rest of the forest is visible. The bottom of the ravine, where the camp entrance—a tunnel through thick gorse—lies is reached by traversing down boulders. The camp entrance is a tunnel through a thick patch of gorse. The grass inside the tunnel is flattened and strong-smelling.^[32]

The camp itself consists of a clearing edged with thick grass and dotted with tree stumps. At the center of camp, the ground is hard and bare. A thick curtain of ferns and gorse shields the camp, and it is also surrounded by brambles. There is a tall boulder at the head of the clearing, called the Highrock, used by the Clan leader to call meetings.^[33] A vast, sandy clearing stretches to the Highrock,^[34] and there is scuffed earth at its base.^[35] Additionally, the fresh-kill pile usually lies at the side of the clearing.^[34] At one point, the camp was burned down in a fire, but the vegetation grew back quickly.^[36]

• The nursery is under a thick bramble bush that appears impenetrable.^[37] There is a gap in the bush that leads to the clearing.^[38] Beside the nursery on one side is the warriors' den, and on the other is the apprentices' den.^[34] Additionally, the dirtplace is behind the nursery,^[39] as well as a secondary way out of camp.^[40]
• The apprentices' den is in a clump of ferns in a corner^[34] behind a mossy tree stump where the apprentices share fresh-kill^[41] and in front of a towering barrier of gorse. It is beside the nursery.^[34][42]
• The warriors' den is under a thornbush^[43] with low-hanging branches.^[44] Near it is a nettle patch^[45] either under or very close to under Highrock.^[34] The warriors' den is beside the nursery^[46] and a few paces from Highrock, and it also has a clear view across camp of the gorse entrance, as well as being across the clearing from the elders' den,^[44] and having a clear view of the prisoner's den. It is said that the senior warriors sleep near the center, the warmest area.^[44] It is also an honor if senior warriors invite younger warriors to eat with them by the bush.^[44]
• The medicine den, located in a shadowy corner of camp,^[44] is in a grassy clearing, the entrance to which is a tunnel of ferns. On one edge of the clearing is a small pool of water. The clearing is surrounded by ferns on all sides except for where the medicine den, a rock split down the middle by a large crack, sits. Sick patients are kept in openings in the ferns, while herbs are stored in the large rock where the medicine cat sleeps.^[47]
• The elders' den is a patch of lush grass sheltered by a fallen tree's tangled branches. It is entered under a jutting branch of the fallen tree through a maze of twigs that eventually leads to an empty space inside. Grass, moss, and ferns sprout from every crevice in the tangle of wood.^[48] It is on the opposite end of the same fallen tree that houses the prison.^[28][49] From the perspective of the warriors' den, it is past the medicine den.^[44] From the perspective of the nursery, it is beyond the nettle patch that is by Highrock and the warriors' den.^[34]
• The leader's den is a cave in Highrock which was carved out by an ancient stream, with lichen hanging over the entrance.^[50] Inside the den is a quiet cove with a smooth floor and walls, a mossy nest at one side.^[51]
• The prison is at the other end of the fallen tree where the elders gather to eat and sleep, out of their earshot but easily visible from the warriors' den. The prisoner's nest sits up against its mossy trunk.^[28][49] The den is later described as being under the branches of a fallen tree close to the elders' den,^[30] though the description is similar enough that any differences are likely an error.
• The dirtplace is a sandy area bound by nettles behind the nursery.^[39]
• A secondary way out of camp is through a wall of ferns^[52] found behind the nursery. It is said to be the easiest way to sneak out of camp.^[40]

WindClan

The WindClan forest camp is in a sandy hollow, surrounded by gorse bushes^[53] and heather.^[54] The entrance is through a heather tunnel.^[55] A tall, dark granite boulder in the middle of the hollow called the Tallrock,^[56][57] is used by the leader to call meetings in a shallow hollow called the Meeting Hollow.^[54]

• The nursery is under a thick gorse den^[58][59] with branches of a hawthorn tree hanging over it.^[60]
• The apprentices' den is underneath a gorse bush, though the wind still streams through it. There is a smooth boulder that holds back the roots of the bush where the wind is not as sharp.^[61]
• WindClan's warriors do not have a dedicated den but instead sleep under the stars. When the Clan was divided into tunnelers and moor-runners, the tunnelers made their nests by a bracken patch,^[62] while the moor-runners made their nests within tall grasses.^[63]
• The medicine den is located in a scooped-out cave with a gorse screen on one side. The floor is sandy. There is a grinding stone, a wide stone at the side of the gorse cave.^[64]
• The elders' den is made of gorse at the far end of the clearing.^[65] It is near the Hunting Stones, smooth, low rocks in the grass nearby, and are surrounded by heather and moss.^[66] There is an additional small rock cluster near their den.^[67]
• The leader's den is underneath a gorse bush at the far end of the clearing.^[68]

RiverClan

The RiverClan forest camp is on a large, well-drained island and is surrounded by reeds and sedge.^[69][70][71] There is shallow water surrounding it.^[70] It can be reached only by swimming or by the stepping stones,^[72] and as cats from other Clans cannot swim, the camp is rarely attacked. Floods present a danger; once, a flood swept away the floor of the nursery, along with two of Mistyfoot's kits.^[73] The Clan leader sits on a large rock near the edge of the camp with a shallow stream surrounding it.^[74] All dens are made up of tightly woven reeds.^[75] Cats weave feathers in the reeds and decorate the edges with rocks and shells.^[76] The dens are capable of floating during a flood.^[77][78] There is a well-trodden grass track leading away from the sedges and between thick bushes of the camp.^[79] The camp itself is in a clearing.^[80]

• The nursery is tucked away into a thick sedge wall.^[80] It is made of willow branches and reeds.^[77]
• The apprentice den has a warm coating of moss on it.^[80]
• The medicine den is surrounded by deep olive sedge. It opens to a small clearing with a nest on one side.^[81] The herb storage is in a small hollow in the sedge wall^[82] where little caves are dug into the ground to store herbs.^[83] Its opening is draped by moss.^[84]
• The warriors' den is woven against a fallen and thick tree.^[85]
• The elders' den is at the high end of a slope.^[86] It is made of woven willow stems.^[87]
• The leader's den is built of willow stems and woven into the roots of the ancient willow.^[80]

ShadowClan

The ShadowClan forest camp is in a hollow with muddy ground surrounded by brambles and pine trees.^[88] The entrance is through a thorn tunnel.^[89] On the opposite end of the clearing is the Clanrock, a smooth boulder covered in lichen, and it is used by the leader to call meetings. The Clan's dens are shallow hollows surrounded by thorns,^[90] and lined with moss and pine needles.^[91]

• The nursery is in a hollow, shielded by a thorn bush.^[92]
• The warriors' den is under a large bramble bush.^[90]
• The medicine den is in a cave under two boulders, one being the Clanrock.^[93] The cave is a tiny clearing edged with thick ferns. On the far side, is a pool of water with pine trees overhead. Herbs are stored along one side of the clearing in tiny holes covered with ferns.^[93]
• The elders' den is underneath thick branches with a stump.^[94] A broken tree stump with new sprouts is not far.^[95]
• The leader's den is beneath the roots of a big oak tree.^[96]
• The prison is a small pit in the far corner of the clearing, kept covered by a pile of leaves and twigs.^[29]

Ancient SkyClan

The SkyClan forest camp is surrounded by brambles. On one side of the camp clearing is a hazel bush.^[97] The fresh-kill pile is underneath an elderflower tree. There is also a tree stump in the center of the clearing that warriors sun themselves on.^[98] The Clan leader sits upon the thin branches of a gnarled thorn tree.^[99] SkyClan's camp was destroyed when the Twolegs built the Twolegplace, and they were forced to leave the forest. The Twoleg nest where Smudge lives is built right on top of the old SkyClan camp.^[100]

• The apprentices' den is beneath some ferns.^[100]
• The medicine den is lined with branches that moonlight shines through.^[101]
• The leader's den is beneath an elderberry bush.^[102]
• The elders' den is underneath some bushes.^[103][100] Just beyond it is a stream at the edge of the camp.^[98]

ThunderClan

The ThunderClan lake camp is in an abandoned quarry, described as a stone hollow enclosed by tall cliffs that are taller on one side than the other.^[104] The main entrance is through a thorn tunnel, which can lead out of the camp after exiting the dirtplace.^[105] There is also a secret entrance that is reached by climbing the rocks.^[17] The opening of the quarry is protected by a thorn wall.^[106] The walls offer protection and keep out the wind, but cats must watch their step near the edge as falling into the hollow can be fatal.^[107] A tall rock called the Highledge is used by the leader to call meetings, about half-way up the cliffside.^[108] The cats use large, flat rocks to bask themselves in the sun and share tongues,^[109] such as Halfrock, which is a smooth low stone that rises out of the ground near the elders' den.^[110] At one point, badgers devastated the camp, but it was rebuilt by the Clan.^[111]

• The nursery is under a thick bramble thicket^[112] up against the rock wall.^[113] It was later reinforced with thick roots woven together for protection.^[114] Its floor is made of packed earth.^[115]
• The apprentices' den is either in a shallow cave in the rock wall,^{[112][note 1]} or under a sterile yew bush with dense branches and a pleasant scent.^{[121][122][note 2]} The entrance is covered in ferns.^[131]
• The warriors' den is in a dip in the ground under a big thorn bush,^[132] and after a tree falls in Fading Echoes, it is rebuilt under the branches of a beech tree.^[114]
• The medicine den is a cavern near the tallest parts of the cliffs. On one side, water drips down to form a tiny pool. The floor is sandy and cool to the touch. Herbs are stored in cracks in the rock walls.^[133] The entrance is covered by a screen of brambles.^[134]
• The leader's den is located in a cave in the cliffside on top of Highledge. A rock tumbled pathway leads up to the leader's den.^[135]
• The elders' den is underneath a twisted hazel bush,^[136] and later is rebuilt under the boughs of a beech tree and reinforced with honeysuckle.^[114]

WindClan

The WindClan lake camp is a shallow scoop in the ground of the moor.^[137] Unlike other camps, it does not have any natural protection; they rely on the warriors to protect it. There are gorse bushes outlining the camp that the cats sleep under.^[138] There are several boulders nearby, the highest being called the Tallrock and used by the leader to call meetings.^[139][140] Cats often lounge or eat on the other boulders.^[139] The clearing has sandy ground.^[141]

• The nursery is under a gorse bush.^[142] After a tree falls into WindClan's nursery during a storm, WindClan rebuilds the nursery incorporating the fallen tree with bramble and bracken.^[143]
• WindClan's warriors and apprentices sleep out in the open but still have a designated sleeping area.^[144][145] When it rains, they sleep underneath the gorse bushes surrounding the camp.^[146]
• The medicine den is in a crevice in a rock.^[147] The herb storage is located in the back of the den.^[148]
• The leader's den is located underneath Tallrock.^[149]
• The elders' den is in an old badger set^[150] and is sheltered by a gorse bush.^[142]

RiverClan

The RiverClan lake camp is on a triangle of land between two streams sheltered by hazel, brambles,^[151] and a wall of reeds.^[152][153] The camp can be accessed through a reed tunnel.^[154] It can be reached by swimming or by crossing the stream via stepping stones.^[152] Twolegs often disturb the cats during greenleaf; once, they had to abandon the camp as they were harassed by Twoleg kits.^[155] The clearing is surrounded by bushes.^[156] Leaders and cats who wish to address the Clan use the Highstump.^[157] Elders like to sun themselves on a sandy slope in the camp.^[158]

• The nursery is underneath a bramble thicket.^[152] The other dens are also under bramble thickets^[158] made of reeds with shells woven into them.^[159]
• The medicine den is under a thorn bush overhanging the stream. The ground below the roots was washed away, leaving a pool. Herbs are stored in a small hole in the washed away bank^[152] that is covered by reeds.^[160] Dock leaves grow by the stream.^[161] A stretch of pebbles lies in front of the den,^[156] and the den itself is between two mossy rocks.^[158] Reeds line the den roof.^[162]
• The leader's den is underneath a rowan tree in a cavern.^[163]
• The elders' den is underneath a bush.^[164]

ShadowClan

The ShadowClan lake camp is concealed in a wide hollow,^[165] between tangles of brambles^[166] and low-hanging branches, and is a dip beneath the pine trees.^[165] The entrance is through a thorn tunnel.^[167] The leader makes their announcements from a branch hanging over their den, called the Pinebranch.^[168] There is also a tree stump in the middle of the clearing that the leader occasionally speaks from.^[169] Warriors enjoy lounging on the edges of the camp,^[170] or sun-bathing on a flat rock in the camp.^[171] A hazel branch overhangs the camp.^[172] All of the dens are tucked along the bramble wall, and a bramble tunnel leads to the dirtplace from the clearing.^[173]

• The nursery is underneath a bramble thicket with a narrow entrance.^[174] It has a sandy floor.^[175]
• The apprentices' den is underneath a straggly bramble thicket. A dead log is next to it where apprentices sharpen their claws. The den is close to the leader's den.^[169]
• The warriors' den is underneath some low-hanging branches.^[176]
• The medicine den is underneath a prickly bush with a bramble tunnel and wall. It has a sandy, hollowed-out floor covered in dried pine needles. The medicine cats sleep in the back of the den.^[177] Herbs are stored in a crevice in the bramble wall.^[178]
• The leader's den is in a gap behind a huge boulder^[169] with a bramble entrance^[179] and is beneath low-growing branches of a pine tree.^[180] The Pinebranch sits above it.^[181]
• The elders' den is underneath a yew bush^[169] lined with brambles.^[182] There is a puddle nearby to drink out of.^[183]
• The prison is in a bramble enclosure in the thickest part of the camp wall. A dark and gnarled hollow tree sits in the tiny clearing. ShadowClan used to store prey there.^[31]

SkyClan

After the Sisters were forced from their territory beyond the abandoned Twoleg nest, SkyClan moved in.^[184] The camp is nestled in a grassy valley surrounded by stones and trees,^[185] including birch.^[186] This sheltered valley makes it easier to catch prey even in leaf-bare.^[187] The camp also has a pebbly floor^[188] and is lined with grass.^[189] The Clan leader holds Clan meetings from the Tallrock, a massive boulder three tail-lengths high in the center of the camp. It is blotched with yellow lichen.^[188] The Clan leader also holds Clan meetings on a stump called the Tallstump.^[190]

• The apprentices' den is screened by rocks^[191] with woven branches.^[192]
• The warriors' den is underneath a hawthorn bush with spreading branches.^[191]
• The medicine den is near two boulders on the far side of camp^[191] underneath a dogwood bush in a shallow dip.^{[193][194][195]}
• The leader's den is beneath the Tallrock in a hollow space.^[188] A rock sits outside the den entrance.^[196]

SkyClan (former)

The SkyClan lake camp was former ShadowClan territory given to them by Tigerstar. The camp is in a clearing among pine trees, where a small stream cuts through. Cedar and juniper grows within the camp, making it like an oasis. Low branches that hung with lichen forms a dome-like shape over the grove. The camp is edged with ferns, making natural walls, reinforced with woven bramble.^[197] Cats would sun themselves on flat rocks littered throughout the camp.^[198] The Clan leader holds meetings on the cedar roots of the leader's den called the Highroot.^[199] The camp was used again by the rebels.^[200]

• The nursery is under a bramble thicket near the stream.^[197]
• The apprentices' den is under a low-growing juniper.^[197]
• The warriors' den is under a bramble bush^[197] lined with bramble walls.^[201] Its hollow is expanded when ShadowClan warriors join the Clan.^[202]
• Below the roots of the cedar of the leader's den is the medicine den in a cave.^[197] The entrance is covered in lichen.^[203]
• The leaders' den is a hollow in an old cedar, the entrance being at the top of the tangled roots. It is on the far end of the camp.^[197] Its entrance is covered in lichen.^[199]
• The elders' den is a clump of ferns.^[201]

Other camps

SkyClan (the gorge)

After being driven out from the forest, SkyClan made a new camp at the source of the River Chell, in a narrow gorge. The Clan made their dens in caverns zigzagged along the gorge walls. The Skyrock is the highest point in the camp, used by the SkyClan cats to hold Gatherings, and can be used to oversee the entire landscape. At the bottom of the gorge, near the river source, there is a pile of boulders called the Rockpile, used by the leader to stand on during Clan meetings.^[204]

• All the dens are caves in the rock wall, with narrow trails leading to them. The lowest is the medicine den, close to the river, where plants grow.^[204] The outer cave has an inner cave used for storing herbs in the cracks in the cave wall.^[205] The highest is the warriors' den; this den is also used as a refuge during floods, as the water never reaches it.^[204]
• The nursery cave is just below the elders' den, with a narrow entrance with a large boulder blocking most of the entrance to shield the cats inside from enemies and hot sunlight. Its walls are marked with tiny claw marks.^[206][204]
• Underneath the Rockpile is a cave lined with glowing moss called the Whispering Cave, where the SkyClan medicine cats share tongues with SkyClan's ancestors.^[204]

TigerClan (modern)

When ShadowClan and RiverClan united to form TigerClan, neither of the two camps were large enough to host all cats, therefore they made a camp in RiverClan territory, next to the river in a clearing surrounded by reeds.^[207] The cats made a hill of prey bones called Bonehill to serve as a vantage point for the leader and to hold Clan meetings. It also served as a reminder for the Clan to see how well-fed they are. The camp reeks of carrion.^[208] After Tigerstar's death, the ShadowClan cats stay in TigerClan's camp.^[209]

• The prison, where Featherpaw, Stormpaw, Stonefur, and Mistyfoot were kept, is near a narrow path with frozen mud. An occasional clump of hawthorn and gorse can be seen, along with a grassy slope. Up halfway, in the hillside, a large, dark hole yawns. A cat is usually guarding it.^[210]

ShadowClan elders

When Brokenstar orders the elders to leave the ShadowClan camp, as they do not hunt or fight, the elders find a copse of trees near a hole in a bank shaded by ferns, well within the territory, which Yellowfang and Runningnose help them enlarge to make a den.^[211][212] The entrance to the den is later reinforced with sticks and walls woven from plants so it would not be as exposed to the weather,^[213] and the ferns are also reinforced with sticks and logs, though an entrance to the camp itself is created as well.^[214] A small fresh-kill pile is soon established within a circle of stones slightly outside the den.^[215] The camp is later abandoned when the elders move back to ShadowClan following Brokenstar's exile.^[216]

The Tribe

The Tribe of Rushing Water shelter in the Cave of Rushing Water, a large cave behind a waterfall.^[217] Kit-mothers and to-bes rest in separate nooks, while the cave-guards, prey-hunters, and elders sleep in the main cave. Within the cave is a tunnel that leads to the Cave of Pointed Stones, where the Healer communicates with the Tribe ancestors and sleeps.^[218]

The wildcats

The wildcats shelter in a large clearing, protected by two large boulders with a narrow passageway between them.^[219] At one end of the clearing, prisoners are held in a spot surrounded by a bramble thicket so they are unable to escape without being spotted.^[220] The entire area is enclosed by trees, thorns, and undergrowth, with a stream crossing through to provide water^[219] and the undergrowth providing ample room for dens.^[220]

Life in the camp

• At dawn, the deputy appoints the daily patrols.^[221]
• Border patrols leave at dawn and sunset.^[222]
• Several hunting patrols leave daily. Some Clans (like ShadowClan) prefer to hunt at night; the others generally hunt during daytime.^[60]
• Some warriors always remain in the camp to guard it in case of an attack.^[223]
• Mentors train their apprentices at a designated place (like the training hollow in ThunderClan), or take them on patrols.^[224]
• Apprentices do chores such as: tidying up dens, changing used bedding, and tending to queens and elders. The elders usually tell them stories while they give them moss balls soaked in water, fresh-kill, or get rid of their ticks and fleas. New medicine cat apprentices learn the different herbs while more experienced medicine cat apprentices help with minor illnesses, kitting, and injuries.^[225]
• The medicine cat treats and tends to injured or ill cats, trains their apprentice if they have one, and leaves to gather herbs when supplies are running low.^[226]
• The leader oversees what happens in the Clan, consults with warriors, and calls a meeting if needed. (e.g. a kit becoming an apprentice).^[19]
• Cats who stay in the camp usually rest, sunbathe in the clearing, eat prey, or share tongues.^[227] Cats are most active during the morning and late afternoon; they often rest during the night and at noon.
• At night, one or more warriors stay awake to guard the camp while the others sleep.^[228]
