Wildcats are small carnivorous mammals, similar to domestic cats.[1]

«Trying to hide how weary her paws were feeling, Ivypool admired the powerful movements of the wildcats. Though they were only a little larger than the Clan cats, they seemed stronger and faster and better able to endure.»
—Ivypool's thoughts about the wildcats Ivypool's Heart, page 272
Wildcats are solid tabbies with bushy, blunt-tipped tails.[2] They are typically all brown tabbies, though may vary in lighter or darker hues, with long, glossy pelts.[3] They have powerful haunches great for leaping high distances, muscular frames, and massive paws with thicker pads.[4] Compared to cats, they are taller and broader;[2] even young kits are nearly as large as fully grown warriors.[5] Cats and wildcats speak similar languages, though wildcats' accent sounds like they are speaking through mouthfuls of rocks.[2]
Wildcats live in large communal groups, similar to Clans. Their enemies are foxes and badgers. However, their greatest threat is the destruction of their territory by Twolegs.[1]

Relation to cats

"To begin with, I was scared. Would these massive cats look on me and my kits as prey? But my fears soon faded away as the wildcats took us to their camp. It was more like a Clan camp than anywhere we had stayed since we left our forest territories, and we felt at home right away. They didn't have separate groups like warriors and apprentices, so each family had their own den, except for the elders, who shared a den and seemed like a combination of leaders and medicine cats. When we arrived, they found us a comfortable spot to make our den, and they brought us fresh-kill. They told us we were welcome to stay as long as we wanted. They were so kind."
―Galestar about the wildcats Ivypool's Heart, page 228
The wildcats are friendly to cats; a group of wildcats rescued Galestar and her kits from a storm and allowed them to stay in their group.[6] They are also spiritual, believing that their dead live on through their ancestors[1] who guide all young kits to adulthood.[7] Wildcats are also capable of mingling with domestic cats. Much of the wildcats group are descendants of Galestar and her kits, and Galestar herself had a family with Bound Hunt.[6]
