Chapter description
- Gray Wing and Lightning Tail are trying to find Slash's camp. They travel around the Carrionplace; Gray Wing confirms that Fern said it must be the place where Star Flower is being held. When Leaf and Reed question Fern's whereabouts, Gray Wing reflects on how he had tracked her down in the past quarter moon and that she had sought him out after she found out more information about where Slash keeps prisoners. Now, Fern finally comes to meet Gray Wing and his cats. She retorts and insists on keeping her word when Leaf reveals how they had almost doubted her promise. Fern then leads them from the row of trees and shows where Star Flower is being held, though it is being protected by two guards. Gray Wing thanks her for her help and sends her away so that they can begin saving Star Flower. Lightning Tail acts as a decoy, distracting Swallow and Snake so that Gray Wing and Reed can access Star Flower and free her from her prison. She warns them that there are more than the two guards Fern had known about and that they will be returning from their Carrionplace hunt soon.
- Star Flower is ushered past the fighting cats. Lightning Tail and Leaf are battling with the rogues, and soon enough, Gray Wing gets attacked as well. He insists that Star Flower keep running when she turns back, and he sends Reed with her for the sake of her safety. Gray Wing then turns back to the fight and yowls to grab Lightning Tail's attention—some rogues have broken off and are pursuing Star Flower. They scare the remaining rogues into submission, hurrying towards the pines. Gray Wing and Lightning Tail are alarmed by Star Flower's pained cry, and when they arrive at the edge of the Thunderpath, Reed exclaims that she has started kitting.
