This page contains Fidgetflake's personality and relationships. It contains conjecture due to being based off of general novel themes, and all statements must be sourced.
Personality and traits
- «He looks like a leader. He's acting more like a leader than a medicine cat, isn't he? [...] Could Fidgetflake be the "two-faced cat"?»
- —Starlingpaw's assessment of Fidgetflake as he calms the Clan Hidden Moon, page 58
- Fidgetflake is an intelligent, competent,[1] loyal, spiritual, dedicated, and reliable medicine cat. He takes to his responsibilities with a clear certainty of purpose and continues to show that steadfastness of character through all of the hardships his Clan suffers, serving his Clan and StarClan with solemn devotion.[2] He is compassionate toward the sick and shows concern for the health of cats in other Clans.[3] Moreover, he has a serious demeanor when protecting his Clanmates,[4] offering a reassuring presence and calming them like a leader through turmoil.[5] As a kit, he was bold against the threats of Darktail's rogues and tried to be brave through his grief.[6] He remained brave into adulthood in his attempts to find Frecklewish.[7] While he is sympathetic[8] and friendly toward strangers,[9] he is occasionally crabby, impatient,[10] and critical if he believes someone is being deceitful.[11][10] He bore SkyClan no ill will when they failed to rescue him from the Twolegs[7] and showed wit in his decision to return to the gorge afterward, bragging of his skill escaping the Twolegs.[7] Moreover, he has no qualms with eating tasty Twoleg food.[12]
Relationships
Echosong
- "We'll look after you, Echosong. Are you comfortable there? If you stretch out more it should be better. And can we find you any herbs to help with the pain?"
- ―Fidgetkit fussing over Echosong Hawkwing's Journey, page 207
Echosong was Fidgetflake's mentor but occasionally asked too much of her apprentice.
- Fidgetkit was first introduced to medicine in the aftermath of SkyClan's defeat in the gorge when he and Curlykit were found by Hawkwing, Pebblepaw, and Echosong. Echosong was affectionate but realistic toward Fidgetkit, gently confessing that Snipkit was likely dead, though she indulged his hopes. She protected him and Curlykit from a raccoon and Fidgetkit helped gather and apply cobwebs to her wounds.[4] Fidgetkit stayed by Echosong's side, healing their Clanmates as SkyClan sheltered at Ebonyclaw's Twoleg nest,[13] and was thrilled when Echosong recommended him as a medicine cat apprentice.[14] Moreover, Fidgetpaw respected his mentor, declining to challenge Echosong when she left SkyClan's care up to him.[15] Echosong was horrified to learn that her apprentice had been captured by Twolegs[16] and the two never met again, as she died of infection several moons later.[17] However, Fidgetflake and Frecklewish speak with her in StarClan at the Moonpool.[18]
Frecklewish
- "There's nothing left for us here. Let's fetch Frecklewish and leave."
- ―Fidgetpaw about leaving the gorge to join SkyClan at the lake Darkest Night, page 203
Frecklewish completed Fidgetflake's training and granted his medicine cat name.
- Frecklewish was a medicine cat alongside Echosong when Fidgetkit was born. However, she was captured by Twolegs after Darktail drove SkyClan from the gorge, and Fidgetpaw did not encounter her again until he returned to the gorge after escaping from his own Twoleg captors. Fidgetpaw bravely climbed the trees overlooking her Twoleg nest, but he could not reach her. His powerlessness to save her deeply discouraged Fidgetpaw,[7] but when Hawkwing's patrol arrived, he was able to help free Frecklewish.[19] At the lake, Frecklewish became Fidgetpaw's new mentor and she granted him his full name, Fidgetflake.[20] The two work well together and attempt to diffuse tensions with ShadowClan,[21] but Frecklewish intentionally left Fidgetflake out of the early activities of the rebels.[10] Fidgetflake has disagreed with Frecklewish on serveral occasions, such as when he objected to bringing warriors to break the ice on the Moonpool[22] and when he disagreed that their inability to reach the Moonpool was StarClan's sign that Leafstar should remain leader.[23]
Rootspring
- Rootpaw: "I'm sorry! I tried so hard, and it was no use."
- Fidgetflake: "Don't blame yourself."
- Veil of Shadows, page 102
Fidgetflake supported Rootpaw's efforts against the impostor.
- Rootpaw sought out Fidgetflake when he began seeing Bramblestar's ghost, hoping to get advice while not admitting what he had seen.[24] Fidgetflake was among the few medicine cats to believe Rootpaw when he summoned the ghost[25] but he was not enthusiastic about mentoring him, as Rootpaw had no talent for medicine. Still, Rootpaw appeared closer with Fidgetflake than Frecklewish, as his first instinct was to fetch Fidgetflake when he found Shadowsight mortally injured.[26] Likewise, Fidgetflake praised how hard his apprentice was working and supported Rootpaw against other cats' doubts when he and Tree performed a ritual to summon Bramblestar's ghost, comforting him when they failed.[27] Moons later on their journey to find catmint, Rootspring shoved Fidgetflake to safety across the Thunderpath when the medicine cat fell behind.[28]
Starlingpaw
Starlingpaw initially distrusted Fidgetflake but realized his suspicions were misplaced.
- "I'm not sure I can trust you..."
- ―Fidgetflake to Starlingpaw about watching Crowfeather Chasing Shadows, page 69
Curlypaw and Snipkit
- «[Snipkit's] littermates, Curlykit and Fidgetkit, had whimpered all through [her burial], and ever since, Hawkwing had noticed that they wandered around in a daze, all their high spirits gone»
- —Fidgetkit and Curlykit grieving Snipkit Hawkwing's Journey, page 219
Birdwing and Sagenose
- Sagenose: "I can at least go with them!"
- Leafstar: "No. SkyClan needs you, Sagenose."
- Hawkwing's Journey, page 377
- Upon reuniting with their kits and learning of Snipkit's disappearance, Birdwing gathered Fidgetkit and Curlykit close to her and Sagenose pushed his muzzle into her fur.[4] They watched proudly at their kits' apprentice ceremony[14] and when Leafstar decided that SkyClan would leave their temporary camp, Fidgetpaw sat beside his parents at the Clan meeting. Immediately after, he and Birdwing were captured by Twolegs. Sagenose tore at the grass with his claws, desperate to save them and baulked at the thought of abandoning them.[38] Fidgetpaw reunited with his father at the lake territories.[39]
StarClan
- Mothwing: "What's the difference whether they're with us or not? Does it really change how we live?"
- Fidgetflake: "Of course it does! What's the point of being warriors if we're not guided by our ancestors?"
- Darkness Within, page 181
- Fidgetflake is deeply spiritual and concerned with the Clans' relationship with StarClan.[40] He may even be able to sense ghosts, being able to scent ThunderClan when Squirrelflight's spirit is watching.[41] Upon being made an apprentice, Fidgetpaw was unable to share with StarClan at the Whispering Cave.[14] However, he still had visions during SkyClan's exile, though he lost this connection after Echosong left.[38] Yet, he eventually regained some connection, dreaming of Hawkwing's arrival at the gorge mere days before he arrived. Though he initially believed that StarClan wanted SkyClan reunited with the other Clans,[7] he grew concerned that leaving the gorge had weakened their connection to their ancestors, especially after a period of StarClan's silence.[42] He is defensive that StarClan decides the code for the Clans, not the Clans themselves,[3] and is the only medicine cat seriously concerned by Twoleg activity at the Moonpool.[43]
