While River Ripple is trying to find a new camp for his group, he hears the sound of kits crying and investigates. He sees their mother greeting them and introduces himself to her, and she appears fearful, explaining that Clear Sky chased her family out of his territory. River Ripple allows her to feed her kits, and when she returns, two kits are in tow: a ginger she-kit named Hunter and a white tom-kit named Scout. The two kits introduce themselves, and their mother, Cleo, explains that she took her kits away from her Twolegs because they had planned to send the kits away. River Ripple takes the family back to his camp, with Cleo carrying Scout on the way, and they meet Hollow when they arrive. Hollow remarks that they look odd for fish, and Scout retorts that they are cats.

Night expresses doubt in Cleo's ability to hunt, watching the kits. Over a few days, Night warms to the kits and plays with them. As she and River Ripple lead Night to the river, Night says that Cleo should not learn to swim yet, as the kits may run into the water after her. After his attack on Night, Cleo's mate, Casper, arrives in camp, and his kits greet him happily, with Scout commenting that he had known his father would come. They are dismayed when he says that he wants to take them back to the Twolegs, but they continue to play around him. After Cleo decides to go home with Casper, the kits are upset, and Scout says that he wants to learn to swim. Casper and Cleo comfort him, and River Ripple invites the family to eat before they go. River Ripple misses the kits after they leave, although Cleo later informs him that Hunter and Scout still live with her and Casper as kittypets.
