This page contains Frostdawn's personality and relationships. It contains conjecture due to being based off of general novel themes, and all statements must be sourced.

Personality and traits

«All at once she could remember what it felt like to be the Frostpaw she'd been before Mistystar's death, before the tragedy of her mother. Before she'd been tasked with finding a new leader, before RiverClan's destiny weighed on her shoulders. She had been clever. Quick. Friendly. She had been able to let her guard down when she felt safe. She had been able to feel safe. It felt good to remember that.»

Originally timid and eager to learn, Frostdawn's personality hardened to become more resolved and determined to save her Clan from Splashtail

As a young apprentice, Frostpaw was eager and excited to learn about how to treat her Clanmates and communicate with StarClan, though she secretly thought the latter was more important.[1] She was passionate about helping her Clanmates.[2] However, following the deaths of Mistystar, Reedwhisker, and Curlfeather, Frostpaw began to feel the heavy weight of the burdens she carried as RiverClan's sole communication with StarClan.[3][4] She felt insecure about the importance of her decisions when she was only an apprentice,[5] which furthered when she realized her visions were fake.[4] She felt free from her burdens after she was appointed a warrior apprentice instead.[6] However, Frostpaw became distant and distrustful of others, even her own Clanmates and peers, after she was nearly killed.[7] Riverstar even encouraged her to learn how to trust again,[8] though she found that task quite difficult.[9] It was only after spending time with the Cats of the Park and Nightheart that Frostpaw remembered how it felt to be safe and secure.[10] Upon returning to the Clans, Frostpaw became more resolved, determined, and outspoken to save her Clan from Splashtail,[11][12] and after his death and RiverClan's restoration, Frostdawn became happier and self-assured.[13]

Relationships

Curlfeather

Frostpaw: "Don't you understand what you've done?"
Curlfeather: "I tried to make my Clan strong!"
Frostpaw: "You turned me into a liar! You turned Splashtail into a murderer and he tried to murder me! Aren't you even sorry that I nearly died because of you?"
Curlfeather: "I'm not responsible for Splashtail!"
Frostpaw: "Do you feel responsible for anything you've done?"
Curlfeather: "I'm only responsible for wanting RiverClan to be stronger."
Frostpaw: "You destroyed it!"
Curlfeather: "I'm sorry things ended up the way they did. I'm sorry I trusted Splashtail. I'm sorry for hurting you."
Frostpaw: "But aren't you sorry for murdering your deputy?"
Curlfeather: "I told you! Splashtail murdered—Whoever killed him, Reedwhisker had to go. He needed to make way for a better RiverClan."
—Frostpaw confronting her mother's spirit Star, pages 231-232
Curlfeather doted on her three kits, especially after her mate Jayclaw died. When Curlfeather realized that her daughter Frostkit began to have special dreams,[1] Curlfeather used this knowledge to manipulate her daughter into thinking they were dreams from StarClan so she would train as Mothwing's apprentice. Curlfeather hoped to manipulate Frostpaw into convincing Mistystar that she should be deputy after killing Reedwhisker,[14] though Mistystar abruptly died.[2] She continued to rely on manipulating her daughter even after Mistystar's death, prompting Splashtail to plant a white curled feather near the Moonpool.[15] Frostpaw was insistent that it was a sign from StarClan that her mother should be leader,[16] though her mother was killed by dogs[17] lured by Splashtail.[15] Curlfeather's final act was to ensure her daughter's safety and warning her to trust no cat.[17] Witnessing her mother's death traumatized Frostpaw, who had the daunting task of trying to pick RiverClan's new leader while grieving.[18] Frostpaw even dreamed of her mother from StarClan, though this was from her imagination.[3] Eventually, Frostpaw learned the truth about her mother conspiring with Splashtail, resulting in her fate to the Dark Forest. Frostpaw's feelings remain conflicted between her mother's manipulations and her sacrifice.[15] During her time between life and death, Frostpaw confronted her mother's spirit and was hurt that her mother refused to take responsibility for her actions.[19]

Graysky and Mistpool

«Frostpaw felt a surge of guilt. Graypaw and Mistpaw would be devastated. They'd already lost both their parents. When Curlfeather had died, the two had sneaked into the medicine-cat den to comfort Frostpaw. The three of them were all each other had now, they'd said.»
—Frostpaw's thoughts about her littermates Thunder, page 89
Graysky and Mistpool are Frostdawn's littermates.[20] Even as apprentices, Frostpaw was aware of the distance between her and her littermates when she decided to train as Mothwing's apprentice, and at times, Frostpaw felt lonely.[21] After their mother's death, Frostpaw felt guilty for not spending time with her littermates due to her duties in securing RiverClan's leadership, though she did not wish to bother them either.[5] After transitioning to training as a warrior, Frostpaw trained alongside her littermates. Graypaw and Mistpaw were a bit jealous of their sister due to her importance to the Clan, but they were both pleased she was training alongside them.[6] However, both were skeptical of her decision, since if her visions were wrong, then Curlfeather did not have to die.[22] When Frostpaw decided to stay away from RiverClan after she was nearly killed, she felt guilty for lying to her siblings after their parents' deaths.[8] Her littermates warmly welcomed her back,[23] and Frostpaw hoped her siblings would see the truth about Splashtail.[11] Frostdawn felt pleased when her littermates were given proper warrior names, Graysky and Mistpool.[24]

Mothwing

"I'm sorry I can't help you with this. I'm your mentor. I should be able to teach you. But you have to master this skill alone. That means it'll be harder for you than for an ordinary medicine-cat apprentice. But you're smart, and you're quick, and your heart is in the right place. You can do this. I know you can. You just need to keep trying."
―Mothwing to Frostpaw Sky, page 307
Mothwing was Frostdawn's medicine cat mentor, and Frostpaw knew she had big paws to fill after the death of Mothwing's previous apprentice, Willowshine.[1] Frostpaw was also her Clan's sole connection to StarClan due to Mothwing's lack of faith, and Frostpaw knew Mothwing would be unable to teach her about communicating with StarClan.[25] After Mistystar's sudden death, Mothwing relied on Frostpaw's limited knowledge that Mistystar's spirit was safe.[2][25] Mothwing was initially skeptical about Frostpaw's dreams that Curlfeather should be leader, recalling how her brother Hawkfrost faked a sign so she could be Mudfur's apprentice.[16] Following Curlfeather's death, Mothwing gave Frostpaw the space to grieve but also reminded her that her Clanmates need her.[18] Frostpaw felt daunted by the weight of her decision to choose RiverClan's newest leader, knowing that her mentor could not help her.[3][4] When Frostpaw realized her visions were false,[4] she stepped down from her training to train as a warrior.[6] Mothwing resented Frostpaw for telling Icewing and Tigerstar the truth about her visions.[26] During her self-imposed exile, Frostpaw longed for Mothwing's comfort and reassurance.[8] Mothwing believed Frostpaw's claims about Splashtail, but she refused to leave her Clan in Podlight's incapable paws.[11] Frostpaw helped Mothwing escape to ShadowClan,[27] and Mothwing was determined not to let Frostpaw die.[28][29][30]

Harelight

«A shocked hiss came from Icewing; Frostpaw could see that many of her Clanmates were gazing at her, deeply offended at her failure to trust them. She felt her belly lurch with guilt as she saw the hurt on Harelight's face, as if her mentor was asking, Couldn't you have come to me?'»
—Frostpaw's thoughts about Harelight's pained expression Wind, page 17
Harelight was Frostdawn's warrior mentor,[31] and she considered him a friend.[32] At her ceremony, Harelight promised to teach her tricks he learned to conceal their light-colored pelts. Harelight trained her diligently to keep up with her littermates, and he rebuked their Clanmates when they publicly expressed doubts on Frostpaw's decision. He reassured Frostpaw of her progress, openly admitting that he was also new to mentoring.[31] Frostpaw was eager to learn from Harelight, and she flourished under his warm praise and thoughtful encouragement,[22] and gentle reprimands.[33] Harelight warmly welcomed his apprentice when she returned, though Frostpaw could tell he was hurt she did not come to him after she was attacked.[23] When Harelight was appointed deputy by Splashtail, Frostpaw thought he was working with the false leader until she noticed the guilt in his eyes.[32] Frostpaw later witnessed his death after Harelight questioned Splashtail,[34] and Frostpaw blamed herself.[35] While fighting Splashtail, Frostpaw thought she heard her mentor's voice encouraging her.[12]

Splashtail

«He cast his eyes over the assembled cats, and Frostpaw felt a chill as his gaze swept over her. Splashtail couldn't have seen her, but she felt his hatred. She felt his determination to be leader. Even though her crush on him was long gone, she saw him in a way that only a cat who had cared for him deeply could, and what she saw terrified her. He'd nearly killed her to get what he wanted. What else would be be willing to do? Who would he be willing to sacrifice?»
—Frostpaw's thoughts about Splashtail's leadership Thunder, page 338
Splashtail was aware of Curlfeather's plans to manipulate her daughter Frostpaw into their scheme.[14] While initially hesitant of her abilities as a medicine cat,[36] Splashtail became one of her biggest supporters when she was tasked with picking RiverClan's new leader,[16][18] knowing that she would make the right choice.[5][6] She supported Owlnose's decision to name Splashtail his deputy,[37] After Frostpaw decided to train as a warrior,[31][38] Splashtail tried to convince her otherwise, privately knowing that she would be important in his plans to become leader.[39] Frostpaw developed a crush on him and wanted to be his mate, though Splashtail kindly dismissed her until she earned her warrior name.[40] Frostpaw trusted Splashtail enough that he was the only cat she told about her dream of Reedwhisker's death. Splashtail prompted her to seek out Whistlepaw alone at night,[41] only to attack her.[42] Frostpaw knew it was Splashtail who attempted to kill her,[7] but her trauma caused her to deny that fact until Riverstar helped her accept the truth.[10] She confronted Splashtail at the Gathering and attempted to reveal the truth, but the other Clans did not believe her.[23] After Harelight's death by Splashtail, Frostpaw resolved to do everything she could to save her Clan from Splashtail.[34] Frostpaw was the one to eventually kill Splashtail, ending his reign in RiverClan.[12]

Nightheart

«For now, he was her Clan.»
—Frostpaw about Nightheart Thunder, page 216
Nightheart was one of Frostdawn's true first friends

Nightheart was one of Frostdawn's true first friends

Nightheart is a ThunderClan warrior and a close friend of Frostdawn.[15] He was chosen by StarClan to accompany Frostpaw on her journey to the Cats of the Park. Frostpaw convinced Nightheart to accompany her by implying he would help save the Clans.[8] While initially distrustful of him,[9] Frostpaw began to open up to him[43] and even confided about her mother's death relating to her fear of climbing trees.[44] She came to appreciate his companionship and loyalty,[10] encouraging her to take her time despite their lengthy stay with the park cats.[15] Over time, Frostpaw realized he was her friend.[15] When Frostpaw addressed the Gathering about Splashtail's schemes, Nightheart advocated for his friend.[23] Nightheart worried for his friend after they parted ways,[45] and he accompanied her to spy on RiverClan.[34] Nightheart was updated regularly on Frostpaw's condition,[46][30] and he was brought by her side when Mothwing feared she was dying.[47] After RiverClan found its new leader, Nightheart was pleased to see his friend Frostdawn finally happy in RiverClan.[13]

Whistlebreeze

Frostpaw: "You're a brave cat. I never had the chance to apologize to you for all the trouble you got into with your Clan. It was all because you wanted to help me, and I can never thank you enough for what you did."
Whistlepaw: "It was nothing."
Frostpaw: "It was everything. Without you, I would have died, and no cat would ever have known the truth about Splashtail. I just wish I could have convinced every cat, so that your sacrifice would have been worth it."
Whistlepaw: "It was worth it. I know the truth—even if my Clanmates don't believe me."
—Frostpaw and Whistlepaw Wind, page 238
Frostpaw met Whistlepaw at her first half-moon meeting, and she was relieved to meet another apprentice.[1] Frostpaw sought out Whistlepaw about her vision from StarClan,[33] and it was Whistlepaw who found Frostpaw wounded on the moor. She brought Frostpaw to Smoky.[48][7] Whistlepaw kept Frostpaw's promise not to tell the Clans that she was alive,[8][49] and Whistlepaw was punished by Harestar and Kestrelflight for lying.[50][51] Frostpaw treated Whistlepaw's wounds after she attempted to rescue her sister Leafkit from a fallen tree, and Frostpaw thanked Whistlepaw for protecting her secret.[52] Frostdawn and Whistlebreeze were granted their full names together.[24]

Riverstar

"You must trust them to take care of you when you can't take care of yourself. Meditation can show us things that are difficult to know. It can stir up powerful emotions. You mustn't let them consume you. RiverClan needs you to stay strong. And that means you must accept help when you need it."
―Riverstar to Frostpaw Thunder, page 229
Riverstar was RiverClan's founder, and he was one of the first StarClan spirits to visit Frostdawn. He promised to guide her on emotional recovery, urging Frostpaw to find trust in others. Riverstar prompted her on the journey to find the Cats of the Park,[8] where Riverstar appeared during her first meditation. He provided comfort, wisdom, and reassurance as she mentally recovered.[10] During her final meditation, Riverstar revealed the truth about her mother. Despite the pain, Riverstar promised that he would be with her.[15] Riverstar appeared to Frostpaw and Puddleshine at the Moonpool to signify that Splashtail and Podlight were impostors.[53] As Frostpaw teetered on the edge of life, Riverstar encouraged her to wake up and return to her Clan.[54]

Icestar

Icewing: "I have faith in you, Frostpaw. We all do. You've been so brave and achieved so much already. Just trust yourself. You have what it takes to defeat Splashtail and bring back the real RiverClan."
Frostpaw: "Really?"
Icewing: "Really."
Frostpaw: "I'll do my best."
Icewing: "Your best will be plenty."
—Icewing to Frostpaw before leaving on her quest Star, page 55
Icestar is Frostdawn's great-grandmother, the mother of her grandmother Petalfur.[55] Icewing was a senior warrior during Frostpaw's apprenticeship,[6] and she was chosen by Tigerstar to be RiverClan's temporary leader alongside Cloverfoot.[56] Frostpaw was hesitant to tell Icewing that she didn't have a connection with StarClan.[6] Icewing emphasized with Frostpaw's burden during RiverClan's time of crisis, praising her for doing well.[6] However, Frostpaw blamed Icewing, Duskfur, and Mothwing for not believing her about Splashtail, resulting in Harelight's death.[57] Shortly before her journey, Icewing praised Frostpaw and trusted her abilities to defeat Splashtail in her absence.[35] Later, it was Icewing's voice that brought Frostpaw back from the brink of death.[58] She chose Icewing to be RiverClan's new leader, and the two she-cats vowed to work together to help their Clan.[24]
