- She has SkyClan blood because she is descended from Spottedpelt,[1] and bears a resemblance to her as well.[2]
Author statements
- Kate stated that Spottedleaf was killed so "Firestar didn't have to choose between her and Sandstorm in StarClan."[3] Vicky adds that Spottedleaf died to demonstrate the best of her character by saving Sandstorm.[4] In addition, Kate also confirms it was Spottedleaf's destiny to die saving Sandstorm.[blog 1]
- Vicky stated that the reason why she killed Spottedleaf in The Prophecies Begin arc was because "she would be more interesting dead than alive, and that she wasn't confident about a medicine cat to fall in love."[5]
- Kate personally believes that Spottedleaf would never have given up her duties for Firestar as she was too committed to healing and StarClan.[blog 2]

Mistakes
- She has been described with a white tail-tip.[6]
- She has been mistakenly described with green eyes.[7][8]
- Her name was mistakenly spelled Spotted leaf.[9]
- She is shown without white in Shattered Peace.[10]
- In Leopardstar's Honor, she is shown attending Nightpelt's first Gathering as leader,[11] despite dying the same day Brokenstar was driven out.[12] This error is fixed in the paperback edition, replacing Spottedleaf with Beetlenose.[13]
- She is shown giving Firestar his last life, when it was Bluestar who gives it to him.[14]
- In her bio for The Ultimate Guide: Updated and Expanded Edition, Spottedleaf is listed with dark brown fur.[15]
- Spottedleaf longs to become a warrior in Spottedleaf's Heart.[16][17] However, it was established in Yellowfang's Secret[18] and Bluestar's Prophecy[19][20] that she always wanted to become a medicine cat since she was a kitten.
Continuity
The following information is from sources considered non-canon, retconned, or from adapted material.
- In Secrets of the Clans, a 2007 field guide, Spottedleaf is listed as a significant medicine cat of ThunderClan, and also as Featherwhisker's apprentice. She was a skilled interpreter of StarClan's messages, she interpreted the prophecy that allowed Bluestar to take in Rusty. Spottedleaf walks in the dreams of many ThunderClan cats, especially Firestar's.[21]
- Spottedleaf and Redtail are littermates in Bluestar's Prophecy.[22] However, Spottedleaf is explicitly described as young,[23] and Redtail as a veteran in The Prophecies Begin.[24]
